So I will make the story short. I came to the U.S. at almost the end of the school year and was placed as a Freshman. I had normal classes and thought that my teachers would understand I was “new” and would have enough compassion to give me an average grade, like an 80-85 for example. Now this is where the problem comes in, my English teacher gave a 65 which is “lower than a C”. Now, UCs require out of state applicants to have all grades be C or better which is not my case. Will they outright reject my application due to that 65 or can I make it up in some sort of way? Thanks for reading and would really appreciate comments as I’m getting extremely anxious and I don’t know what to do.
I am not too sure about your case. I know for me, I did not take a fine art class but I was told that doesn’t mean your application is outright thrown out. That could be different for the grade situation though. Best of luck!
@ZZhenghao: What year are you currently? First of all, you need to meet all the a-g course requirements instate or out of state, which includes a passing grade of C or higher in 4 years of English. UC’s also do not consider Freshman grades in their GPA calculation so the D will not be used in the GPA calculation, but will be required to be reported and it will show on your transcript. Did you repeat the class or semester? You can also satisfy your English requirement by the following methods:
ACT/SAT:
ACT combined English/Writing section: Score of 24 satisfies the first three years; Score of 30 satisfies the entire four-year requirement.
SAT Reasoning ExamWriting section: Score of 560 satisfies first three years;
Score of 680 satisfies entire four- year requirement.
SAT Subject Exam in Literature:
Score of 560 satisfies first three years.
AP/IB:
AP English Language and Composition
or AP English Literature and Composition each satisfies all four years of the requirement.
IB HL English: Literature (formerly IB Language A1 English) satisfies all four years of the requirement.
College courses:
A grade of C or better in a UC-transferrable or non-transferrable English composition, literature (American or English) or foreign literature in translation satisfies one of the first three years of the requirement.
A course used to satisfy the fourth year and/or the entire requirement must be UC- transferrable.
Literature courses must include substantial work in composition.
If you have satisfied the English requirement by any of these other methods, you should be fine.
That sounds amazing, so if I score 680 on the SAT Writing section the 4 years will be fulfilled and they will accept my application? And another question, if I require 4 years of English, is the C or higher the average of the 4 years and are the 4 years Freshman-Senior English classes? Sorry if I’m bothering you too much but I really care about this application. Thanks for answering my previous question.
No, you have to pass each year long English course 9th-12th with a C or higher. I would confirm with UC admissions to make sure but this is the information I got off the UC website.
Here is some more information regarding the English requirement. If it all possible, I would repeat the class to remove the D off the transcript due to the competitiveness of the UC schools.
If a student received a D in ninth-grade English, can they meet the four-year “b” requirement by taking a course in mythology in the 12th grade along with another English course?
Yes, the student would have completed four years of English, even though two of those courses are completed in the 12th grade. For a California high school, the course must be on the school’s UC-approved “a-g” course list.
This is the link I used for the above information in post #2:

Repeating the course would be like going to Summer School right?
Yes.
