Can I get a scholarship/full ride for dance if my major is not dance?

For some reason searches on the internet have not yielded very much on this topic. I’ve heard about schools providing scholarships for students to dance in their dance programs, even if they are science/med/anything else majors. Right now I’m behaving as if I’m majoring in English at a community college, and have applied to several UCs for the upcoming transfer season. I am very prepared to spend an extra year at CC if I need to(I’ve been here for almost 4 semesters). I’m hopelessly undecided about my major/career goals and haven’t ruled out going outside of California for school. So,

Does anyone know of schools that facilitate students financially based on their dance talent (even if dance is not their major)? Thanks in advance.

No, usually you have to major in dance, and even then most of the talent scholarships are not going to be full ride (or even close). Some schools do have very small talent scholarships available to non-music majors who play in the band or orchestra, or a non-drama major to take some drama classes.

Most go to majors and even then are small.

You might get some scholarship money for, your dancing…but you aren’t going to get a full ride because of your dancing…as a non-dance major.

I think it probably depends on the school. However, I do know that I am eligible for several business scholarships that i can only get if I major in business. I assume it is a similar process

Some small liberal arts colleges offer competitive dance scholarships for students who don’t plan to major or minor in dance. For example, St. Olaf and College of Wooster offer such grants, ranging from 2-8K that can be stacked with other merit scholarships. Full tuition or full ride for a dancer who doesn’t intend to major in dance would be extremely rare, if it exists at all, even more so for a transfer student.

The University of Richmond offers up to 6 full tuition merit scholarships for talent in the arts, including dance, each year. Scholarship winners are required to major or minor in an arts area. Info here:

Here is UR’S student profile from last year http://admissions.richmond.edu/studentprofile/index.html
so you can see if you are in range for admission and scholarship consideration. 2 of my kids were awarded scholarships for science, UR is a wonderful school, and the Richmond area is a great place to live.

GWU offers an arts scholarship for dance that doesn’t require a dance major, though you would need a dance minor. It is competitive and requires an audition. See https://theatredance.columbian.gwu.edu/scholarships

I know someone who’s daughter got a scholarship to Case Western in (modern) Dance while she double majors with Physics. They knew going in her primary major was physics, and her mother believes that’s actually what gave her the edge for the scholarship. I heard that Kent State will sometimes offer scholarships (although not sure about how much) for dance without having to be a dance major.
