NYU is my dream school and I have worked very hard in high school. I plan on applying to Steinhardt (Probably Media, Culture, and Communications). I have been told by my high school counselor that my grades and scores are right on track and I am looking for thoughts from people on here as to weather or not she is right!

Thanks for responding! Didn’t take SAT 2’s and only took 1 AP exam and I did not get my score yet. But for NYU you are not required to submit them!

NYU doesn’t require two SATIIs or APs anymore? That’s weird.

How did you do on that one AP? Can you take more? I would, 1 AP doesn’t look too strong. How many does your school offer? NYU likes rigorous schedules!

I took 2 AP classes last year, just only took the AP Stat exam. In my school, you can only start taking AP classes junior year and there was not enough room in my schedule to take any more. I’ve taken all honors and the highest level of each class that I could take. They wont see my AP scores anyway because I am only submitting SAT Scores.

You might want to double check NYU’s exam requirements. At least for last year it was the ACT, the SAT+2 subject tests, 3 subject tests, or 3 AP exam scores. Anyway, you stand a great shot, best of luck to you!

Different standardized test requirements for this year. OP is right. If sending SAT I, no need to send AP scores or SAT IIs or ACT scores.

Also, ambiguous…, Your counselor sounds right. your stats seem to be right in the range for NYU Steinhardt. ESP. If your ECs, essay, short answers and recommendations are a cut above, you should be a strong contender for Steinhardt. By the way, where is the 9 for essay coming from? The ACT? You do not have to report that with the SAT I.

@Evolving, its the number on my score report for my essay on the SAT. Just for future reference, are there statistics for average SAT scores by school at NYU?

Oops, that essay score on SAT I is new to me. ambiguous…, we discussed this not too long ago on this forum. Somehow, NYU keeps the breakdown by school for range of scores very secretive. No one has found them yet. I was really referring to the College Boards reported range, though that apparently needs to be updated. I would say the official range reported tends to be for NYU CAS. Steinhardt tends to be a little easier to get in in terms of stats. Highest stats go to NYU Stern, then CAS, followed by other schools. However, in order of selectivity by percentage accepted, it appears to be this order, Tisch, Stern, Gallatin (think it comes after Stern), CAS, Steinhardt… Not sure where School of Social Work, LSP, Nursing, BA?/ DDS, SCPS, come in in the rank order.

where you can search for universities and it will show you there acceptance rate, SAT/ACT average accepted scores etc.

This is some of the things it says about NYU:

New York University - Admissions

Freshman

Admission: 37,464
Applied; 14,275
Admitted; 5,012 enrolled (38% of applicants accepted)
Average high school GPA: 3.6

Test Scores

SAT critical reading scores over 500 99%
SAT math scores over 500 100%
SAT writing scores over 500 99%
ACT scores over 18 100%
SAT critical reading scores over 600 83%
SAT math scores over 600 88%
SAT writing scores over 600 87%
ACT scores over 24 98%
SAT critical reading scores over 700 32%
SAT math scores over 700 42%
SAT writing scores over 700 37%
ACT scores over 30 48%

Applying

Options: electronic application, early decision, deferred entrance
Application fee: $70
Required: essay or personal statement, high school transcript, 1 letter of recommendation
Required for some: audition, portfolio
Application deadlines: 1/1 (freshmen), 4/1 (transfers)
Early decision: 11/1
Notification: 4/1 (freshmen), 12/15 (early decision)

That is good of you to share the stats from the website you referenced. The range actually adheres somewhat to the college board website. The problem is that may be an outdated composite for all the schools within NYU. for instance, the NYU local newspaper had mentioned that the acceptance rate for NYU CAS was 26% without LSP admits and 30-32% with LSP acceptances calculated into the percentage of students admitted for the freshmen class of 2011. That is below the 38% referenced in your link. Also, the admission rate might be closer to 20% or even less for Stern and definitely lower than 20% for Tisch RD. So we are discussing the problem of not having the admissions rates and statistics laid out for the various schools, e.g., Stern, Gallatin, Tisch, etc. in a clear manner by NYU. The numbers and rates I have quoted are from the NYU newspaper and numbers provided by posters here ( many of whom were also guessing based on what they have heard or seen as students in their respective schools within NYU).

^^^^
As evolving said,
we have been having discussions on admit rates and test scores and quoting different sources that provide different numbers. We believe that sources outside of NYU provided details are out of date - e.g. collegeboard, USNews, etc. Expect USNews and Collegeboard to update in the fall (hopefully. Although it appears that Collegeboard hasn’t updated in 2 years) Otherwise, these outside sources are using different statistical compilations to come up with their admit rates. (Potentially an inclusion of SCPS, etc. for an overall admit rate?)

Hi!
this thread was rather helpful!
sorry i’m reviving this…but…

Can someone tell me a little bit about NYU Steinhardt Media, Culture, & Communications typical stats, and what they look for in applicants? I’m a junior and it is my dream school, I just wanna know if I am on the right track or not.
