Hi, I’m a junior at a boarding school in New Jersey with a 3.87 GPA and 1340 SAT. I took two AP classes this year and will take two more next year, along with an independent study on race relations in America after the era of the Civil Rights Movement and an elective on Harlem Renaissance literature. I also take Mandarin Chinese and I’m taking Pre-Calculus over the summer to finish Calculus my senior year. I am a varsity athlete, though not a recruitable one. I perform in three musical ensembles at my school and perform as a leading or supporting role in two plays per year. I play four instruments and hold a job over the summers. I need aid but not a lot. I’m also a legacy at Wake Forest, if that helps. I would be applying to the College of Arts and Sciences, most likely majoring in economics, Chinese, or history. Could I get into Wake Forest?
My advice would be to start getting a lot of volunteer hours in somewhere (in the community, not a week building a school in Africa or something) And focus heavily on writing considering the supplementary essays are super important for Wake.
Thanks for the advice! I am going to get started writing essays this summer. But while my school builds in time during the year for students to participate in community service, I’m often too slammed with work and practice to find any time for anything outside of school, regardless of what it is.
If you haven’t done so already, try to visit Wake this summer. Also, schedule an interview immediately. Your stats and activities sound acceptable for Wake, but what will seal the deal are your essays & recommendations. Try to make your essays personal and focus on your passions.
If Wake is your definite number one choice, consider applying ED. Being a legacy will help, especially in the ED round.
