i have an 1800 on my SAT's and my GPA is increasing. it's about 4.2 weighted and 3.8 unweighted. for my school, that's pretty good cuz the valedictorian only got 4.4 but i know a lot of ppl get higher than that elsewhere so it might seem low to u.

also i took 10 college classes and went up to calculus 3 maybe calculus 4 if i have a chance.
i want to study neuroscience and im a female asian indian, first generation college student, freshman applicant.

i have volunteer and all that other stuff, cofounder of a hotel, work experience, etc.

Can you retake the SAT? Unfortunately, an 1800 is very low for USC standards. If you can retake it, I definitely think you should.

Of course, there will always be exceptions to the rule. Some people may be able to get in with an 1800 but I suspect that they would only if they have a hook or if everything else in their application is absolutely, stunningly, above-and-beyond stellar. I think the lowest reported SAT score on USC applicant stats was 1840.

Also, you probably realize that USC is a very competitive school and many applicants will have great GPA, great SAT score, great essays, great EC’s, et cetera. So even if you think your GPA, EC’s, and essays are just irrefutably brilliant or you DO have a hook, I’d really suggest retaking the SAT.

I’m pretty sure you can still make the late deadline for the SAT. Hopefully you can do it! Good luck! :)

thanx for taking the time to write all that! yeah im definitely gonna take it again…except ive kinda given up on studying : / but i will start again sometime. well i also dont have much time to study for SAT’s and when i do have time to do something besides homework, which is for like an hour or less, its to shower or relax or eat. I go to skool from 8 AM and come home at 4 PM. and then do hw and i have to memorize Latin translations every day and do chemistry homework and i just started a CSU for calculus soo idk. i wish someone could just take the SATs for me but then i wouldnt get in for ME. lol but yeah do u have any tips on stuff that would make me stand out for USC? and should i apply as neuroscience or business or undecided? my essay is on business becuz my family owns a business and i live there so i wrote about how that helped me in several ways…but i want to go into neuroscience cuz i have a history of migraines and want to help others with it.

I understand that studying for the SAT can be stressful, especially when you have so many other classes to focus on (not to mention college applications themselves!) However, if you’re really serious about going to USC, studying to improve your SAT score is probably the only way you’ll really have a chance of getting in. Are there any extracurriculars you could spend less time on or drop completely? Unfortunately, your SAT score is really important to colleges, so it would probably be worth dropping one extracurricular if it means you could really study or even get a tutor to help you improve your score when you retake the SAT.

As for what will make you stand out, I’m pretty sure “passion” is a big thing for USC. If you’re passionate and dedicated in a particular field of interest and you can prove it through your EC’s (and even through your courses taken in high school), that’ll be a big plus. Even better if it’s an interest you plan to pursue at USC.

Which is where your choice of major comes in. I’m pretty sure the USC Business major will be harder to get into than Neuroscience because USC is more renowned for its business program than it is for the sciences. However, you should do what feel right; what you’re really passionate about and what you really think you want to do with your life. :)

Yeah. There is a chance you’ll get in. But your GPA isn’t like AMAZING. Very good, but probably only will give you a spring admission. However, if everything else is good, then you may still get in for the fall.

Also, have you considered the ACT’s? You may perform better and then wouldn’t have to send in your SAT’s.

I agree, if USC accepts the ACT without the SAT, then I suggest taking the ACT and compare scores. Did you take a review course for the SAT or do a lot of practice SAT tests?
Also, I don’t know if you took any SAT II tests. If you think you have great academic accomplishment in any of the academic areas offered in SAT II tests, consider taking those tests where you think you will excel.

The SAT is like a standard that colleges use to compare students, everyone takes the SAT.

For GPAs, its different. Someone at a top high school taking many weighted classes may have, say, a 3.7 UW, while another person at an mediocre high school may be valedictorian with an easier way to get a high GPA because his school is not as competitive.

So you should think about retaking the SAT.

and does anyone know what they like to see? like i have no idea how to “brag” about what i’ve done…any examples? oh and i wont plagiarize what u have cuz i have written some of my own stuff and u can PM me if u want to see it…

As I understand college admissions, your essay should tell a story about something that you feel passionate about and which answers the prompt. There is no need to “brag”, but be positive, check your grammar, and edit before sending it in.As far as neuroscience for helping others with migraines, don’t you think you need to become an M.D. to do that kind of work? Pre-med and business (co-founder of a hotel) are very different areas of study.

yeah i wrote my essay about the whole business thing to show that i want to join the trojan family because our business was the “family” business. and yeah ill probly be in skool for 13 years to get my md for neuroscience.
