can i get in?

i have approximately a 3.4 gpa at a fairly difficult high school. My weighted is 4.9. I am taking 4 ap classes next year, and have 3 already done. I take honors, science, english, used to take math, and spanish. I am a caucasian female. My act score was a 31. My sat scores were 690 math, 640 verbal, and 610 writing. I am thinking of only sending my act.
My extracurriculars/activities/other stuff include...
track and field 4yrs
cross country 4 yrs
summer running 2 yrs
polar bear(track training) 2 yrs
one summer job at clothing store
outdoor adventure camping, rafting, hiking, etc in bc, canada same summer
high school honor society
camp counselor at day camp one summer
if i think of more i will add them...
I want to run track at johns hopkins and have already sent a recruiting form. I would be competitive.
Does that affect the admissions at all?
I also have a legacy at jh. My grandfather went there, they were going to name a hot dog stand after him, haha. My uncle also went there, and I believe he was one of the top in his class. I don't know how they look at that though.
I took sat II's but they did not turn out very stellar. I took biology against my teachers advisory, and got 580, which i obviously will not send. I took math and got 690 which isn't that great either. I took a practice one for math out of a prep book and got 775. Is it worth retaking?
Haha, I know thats a lot but thanks for reading.
Thanks!

Legacy will help, but your test scores are fairly low (even the ACT score) by Hopkins standards. Your ECs are pretty average, and you didn't mention a lot of academic awards. You have to submit at least 2 SAT II scores I believe, so you will be hurt by your weak SAT II scores. Honestly, if it hadn't been for your legacies, your mundane ECs and average test scores would probably get you rejected RD.

That being said, the fact that you have double legacy will help you significantly, giving you at least a decent chance RD and a great chance ED. Can you tell us any AP exam scores you already have?

um, i got a 4 on ap psych exam, i still haven't gotten english and us history back. But ap scores don't help in admissions decisions. Do athletics help at all? I know that my scores aren't optimal for johns hopkins. It says on the website that satII's aren't required, but are recommended. I want to do triple and long jump and at my present distances I do better than the best varsity jumpers at jh. Some dIII schools take into consideration athletics, but some don't.

by the way, do you go to johns hopkins?

oh yeah, next year I will also be a freshmen adviser, and I took some math test, I think it was called the amap test. I don't know if those add much to extra curriculars.

your weighted is not a 4.9 just saying. even if you took all ap's i think max possible jump from uw to w is 1.2 higher...

OP's school grading system is probably different which accounts for the discrepancy between the two GPAs. Getting recruited to JHU track would help a lot. post your rank if you school does so...that can put your GPA in some context if you school is as difficult as you state.

Good AP scores will help, and 4s and 5s are excellent scores. I'll be attending Hopkins for the 2007-2008 schoolyear, but my sister went to Hopkins and I know a lot of people there. I've met a few professors.

Like skp said, getting recruited to JHU track would help, but I'm not even sure Hopkins can recruit for track, since it's Div. 3. Hopkins, from what I hear, basically couldn't care less about any sports besides lacrosse.

embunnie2:
Just a recommendation ... but you may want to do some searches of old posts on college confidential. You'll find a lot of information about how JHU looks at legacy students, how JHU looks at athletes, how JHU looks at AP scores, how JHU reviews applicants ... just search posts that I have responded to in the past. Some of the information that is being posted on this "chances" thread is just not inaccurate, because none of these members review applications.

my school weights gpa really weirdly. dIII schools do recruit, they just don't give money.

my school is in IL, and it doesn't rank, but I know I am in the top 25%, and a crazy number of students go to schools like this.

You do realize that College Board will send all of your scores, right? You can't decide since your biology or reasoning test score was low that you won't send it if you are sending other SAT II scores.
So if you decide to retake SAT II Math, College Board will also send all your SAT and SAT II scores.

Yeah, College Board automatically sends all your SAT II scores--you can't pick and choose.

ugg. can i just not send them at all?

you have single legacy btw. uncle doesn't count.

what is "summer running"?

I believe you have no legacy at Hopkins unfortunately. I believe Hopkins defines legacy as either mother, father or sibling who has graduated from any division at Hopkins. I remember seeing that from another post sometime last year.

Is a sibling even considered a legacy? I know that at many schools it is not, but a grandparent is.

Legacy is parent, grandparent, great grandparent, and/or sibling.

Here's my 2 cents to you as well as to those who want to know if they can get in:

JUST APPLY. None of us on here can tell you whether or not you'll get in, we don't have that type of power. We, as people in the admissions office and current students, can only give you advice, help answer some questions, but as far as judging whether or not you can get in is really out of our ability. Your scores and GPA are very important, but they won't dictate everything. When I was a junior, I wasn't planning on applying to JHU because I didn't have enough confidence in myself. A friend changed my mind, I applied early decision and got in in one shot and was also offered BME major- I say offer because I didn't apply for it but they invited me in. The worst that could happen is they reject you and you waste some application money. Big deal, you're going to go to another college and life goes on.
