Hi I am currently a junior in high school. I have the opportunity to graduate this year early. I have not taken any AP Classes . I have a 3.3 GPA that should go up a lot because I am going to be taking all honors and I am going to WORK MY BUTT OFF to get all A's in my classes . I want to go to a good university. I currently work 20 hours a week and I have a lot of volunteer hours from my church. I played volleyball and basketball freshman year . I am not in any clubs currently but I work . I think I have a great story to tell the colleges because I have been through a lot in my life . I am currently in foster care and plan on having them pay for my college. I love in Connecticut and would love to go to an out of state school. I think I am going to go undeclared because I have NO IDEA what I want to be or do. Please tell me I have a chance to get into a good college out of state in a good city :) thanks so much

I don’t know a lot about New York City schools, but I live in California and I’m currently in my senior year so I may be able to offer a bit of advice regarding UCs. UCs are unfortunately stupidly difficult to get into, so it will definitely be tough with a 3.3 GPA without APs. That being said, UC schools do use a holistic approach for admissions, and your ECs look good, so be sure to also use what you have experienced outside of school to the fullest extent in your essays. Is it a bit of a reach? Yes. Is it possible? Definitely.

Here are a few things you need to know. But when you say “plan on having them pay for my college”, who is “them”?

You should know that when you are out of state (OOS) for public colleges there is a higher tuition to be paid. For instance, UCs charge an extra $23,000 per year in tuition and they don’t give financial aid for that.

Also for UC admission if you are OOS your minimum gpa has to be 3.4, calculated the UC way, using sophomore and Jr year grades only and weighted for AP. See the UC admissions pages for details.

There are a lot of very good colleges in this country. Many you have not likely heard of yet. Do you have your SAT or psat yet? Have you been talking college plans with your GC yet?

Really you should be using the College Search forum at this point. This one is just for guessing games.

As @BrownParent stated you need a minimum GPA of 3.4 for the UC’s in California and even with the minimum GPA of 3.4, you would probably only have a chance at UC Merced and UC Riverside. Having to pay around $55K/year to attend these UC’s would be a waste of money…

There are many very good colleges closer to home where you would be able to attend. I would use the SuperMatch feature on this website and plug in your STATs (preferably your SAT/ACT and GPA after Junior year) and area preferences to help narrow down some good schools.
