I know my grades are a tad low for this school which puts me at a disadvantage, but I really truly want to here! I have a passion for international service and politics and I believe that this school would give me the proper tools to become a diplomat which is my future aspiration. Moreover, I really feel that I fell in love with the vibe of this campus after I attended its preview day in October and was graciously given a tour of the campus. Everything seems so upbeat and the internships seem amazing! I am hoping I have at least a shot at this school! Can anyone give me suggestions? My Chances of getting in in your point of view? Thank you for reading!

Apply ED2.
Get a letter of recommendation from Liu.
Hope you SAT scores went up.
Get good teacher recommendations.
Participate in online chats with AU admissions.
Cross your fingers.

Or just do test optional!
I did it ED1 last year and got in

Is that 3.0 weighted or unweighted? I think that distinction is quite important.

AU needs more students interested in East Asian affairs, especially Korean affairs. Good luck.

My gpa is unweighted because my school just got AP classes this year and we don’t have a lot now D: They currently offer AP Calc, AP Environmental Science, AP English, and Ap Psych. I am taking AP English AP Environmental Science, Pre-Calculus, Korean, and Government and Economics for my senior year courses. I am doing well in my AP’s I have a 99 in AP environmental and an 85 in AP English. I am afraid to apply ED2 because what if I actually get in but I can’t afford it? I don’t want thousands of dollars of student loans after only my undergrad :(

Well, ED is typically for the those that have the privilege of not having to worry about financial aid. If you’re willing to take the risk you should do it. Otherwise just doing test optional for RD would be fine too in my opinion.

Just do what eldeekay9 said and show high interest in the school through online chats with AU admissions.

If you apply ED and you are counting on financial aid and you don’t get enough, the school will typically release you from your ED commitment.

I am an ED1 hopeful waiting on my decision for entering in the fall of 2014. American is my number one choice by far and I have visited 3 times, one of those times I did the SPA-SIS (School of Public Affairs and School of International Service) Overnight showcase. Highly recommend it btw, made me choose ED1. Included in that was a financial aid presentation and I was able to talk to a financial aid rep one on one. The reason I was not applying ED before the showcase was purely financial reasons that my parents were worried about but after talking to the rep, my parents allowed me to go ED1. This is because the rep told me that the º typical º myth that only people who dont need financial aid should apply ED was not true, at least at American. She didn´t make any promises to me of course but she told my family and I that the way financial aid was decided for ED was the same way it was decided for RD. Also that with applying ED you are making a commitment to the school and the school wants to make a commitment to you, if accepted and that there are less people competing for more money during the ED as well. Lastly, my host for the overnight applied ED for fall 2013 and said because she applied ED she had enough time ti appeal her package and get the package she needed.

Sorry for the novel, just sharing my knowledge on the subject because I know how discouraging it can be knowing financial aid is an obstacle

Also had my guidance counselor call about test optional because I have a 96.489 unweighted gpa and 99.8 weighted but 25 ACT, not in the average range at American, and was on the fence whether to send the test scores or not. They recommended that I apply test optional. Personally, if your gpa is a little low, I would write a killer essay and submit your test scores because without test scores they will want an extremely strong application in other areas
GOOD LUCK with the choice, hope we are future classmates!!

African-American men are an under-represented demographic at AU. Perhaps that will improve your chances at admission.

How can I go about conversing with AU via online chats? Thank you all for the hopeful words!
