Can I get into Cornell?

Hi, I'm currently a junior in high school, and I really want to attend Cornell when I go to college. I want to be a veterinarian, so Cornell is a perfect choice. I just got my SAT score back today, and it was my first time. I think I'm going to take it 2 more times. Math: 600 CR:590 Writing: 610. I'm estimating that I have a 4.09 GPA, with lots of honors and AP classes. I am in the top 10% of my class. I am in the varsity club, bay ecology club, NHS(I am secretary), and SHS. I have shadowed a veterinarian, and I volunteer at a local hospital. I also have 30+ hours from volunteering in club activities. I volunteer at the local kennel. I am also in my school's Biomedical Sciences program, a rigorous magnet program. I am involved with Boy Scouts, and I am going to run a booth in the Science and Engineering Festival in DC. I am also trying to get into a science and engineering program at the local Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Please chance me. Thank you
PS. I also run JV Cross Country, JV track and field, and I swim on the Varsity Swim team

I’d say it’s very unlikely, looking at how bad your SAT scores are.

I plan on taking them at least 2 more times. How much do you think I can raise my score?

Bad chances with such a poor SAT score. Before I can answer how much you can likely raise your score, how much did you study this time around? Were you approaching this as a “let’s see how I do without studying” or did you legitimately prepare? If it’s the former, you can rise your score a lot if you do practice questions and become familiar with the question type; if the latter, you’d probably need some intensive tutoring to have a significant score increase because clearly something isn’t “clicking” in your brain about how to approach SAT-style questions.

…this is exactly why I recommend that students who plan to aplly to very competetive colleges begin taking the SAT in the Spring of their Soph. year or at latest fall of Junior year. you only have approx. 8 months to raise your scores approx. 200 pts. Number of times taken isn’t as important, in my opinion, as finding our early how much improvement is needed & more time to do something about it.

Believe me when I say I have a very strong work ethic. Do you think I can raise my score by at least 200 points in 8 months?

Did you study for the SATs the first time around? If you did, then raising your score by 200pts is a tall order unless you can get a tutor who can work through your issues with the exam.

Well, I took an SAT prep class at my school and really only focused on math. I need to work on my critical reading, as well as raise my math. The teacher was absolutely terrible, she seriously didn’t know what she was doing. Kids in my class were always correcting her on simple algebra calculations. I did learn some helpful test taking strategies though(ex. “plugging in” and “average pie”). I’m not sure if I can afford a tutor.

Your scores definitely need to get higher. If you did a fair amount of practice questions and felt you were familiar with the question types, then I actually think you’re going to need additional help. Maybe not personal tutor, but maybe those online Kaplan courses. I think you can do those for $500. Given your other stats, your SATs really are holding you back from top schools. $500 isn’t a terrible amount in the grand scheme of college costs, plus you may end up being eligible for more scholarships…

Otherwise, you’re going to want to buy a few of those prep books and work through them thoroughly. Make sure you read the answer explanations so you understand why you got a question right/wrong.

I understand, thank you. I also believe that $500 is not important in the grand scheme of things, but my dad will probably not really help me pay for it. He doesn’t believe that I need a tutor for the SAT. Maybe I will just somehow get the money for it. Also, considering I volunteer at a local hospital and kennel, do you think I have a better chance because I obviously have a passion? I want to be a veterinarian. I am probably also going to get another volunteer job over the summer at the Humane Society or an animal hospital.

In the end, grades and scores still matter the most unless your extracurriculars are absolutely out of this world (international level). You have great ecs but now is the time to focus on your grades and academics.

Yes, that’s great and will help. The rest of your application is great, but the SATs are REALLY low. I would try to work the scholarship angle with your parents. Otherwise, make sure you work through the prep books diligently. If you can identify which questions are giving you trouble, maybe your teachers can help. Also, get in the habit of reading. Read every single day. That will help with CR.

I have no idea how I’m supposed to balance reading with AP and other school coursework, researching colleges, preparing for the SAT, participating in numerous sports and clubs, and working at various volunteer activities. I already only average about 5 hours of sleep a night.

I also am expecting that I will be able to write an AMAZING essay. You wouldn’t even believe my AP language and composition teacher. Her class is solely based on essays, and it is definitely one of the most intense classes I have ever taken, probably even more intense than certain college classes. She admits to grading our essays a lot tougher than the AP graders.

To OP. don’t feel down about your chances. There are people who get low SAT’s scores that get accepted into ivy league schools. Just continue doing the prep courses and continue working on your school work.

Thanks to everybody for their feedback!!! I just recently discovered this website, and I believe it is a very valuable resource for the intense college process.

I was wondering if someone could chance me, I know it’s not a lot to go by since I haven’t taken my SAT yet but I just wanted to know if I’m on the right track
I currently have the highest GPA of kids in my grade with an unweighted 3.8 and weighted is almost a 5 I just cant seem to find the exact number at this moment
I made straight A’s freshman and sophomore year, and was only able to take AP World in freshman year and then AP Euro and psych last year. And I’ve passed all of them.
My extracurriculars are strong
Out of school I volunteer at a local vet office during the year, and over the summer I’ve accumulated over 1000 hours working on a horse ranch where I work helping over 80 horses and that includes helping out with disabled kids and inner city kids
At school I was in NJHS and I’m in NHS this year
I helped with theater productions
Science club
Fashion club
And we don’t have a lot of clubs, so I’m going to try to get a lot of my own started this year so I can be in charge of some things.
Im taking ap lang, human geo, and us history this year. And next year I plan on taking AP lit, AP Stat, Ap govt, and macro/micro economics
Along with all honors courses
So if I keep up good grades, and extracurriculars my SAT score just needs to be high to be even considered?
I want to be in the pre-vet program, and my sister made a 2200 on her SAT. I know that doesn’t really apply to me, but I’m just hoping I could get around the same
Thank you! Sorry I don’t have a lot of info

Well, did you guys get in?

2 year old post. closing.
