I’m a flute performance major on my sophomore year at a music conservatory and was thinking of transferring next year. My top choices are Curtis Institute of Music and The Julliard School. My repertoire includes Mozart’s concerti in D and G major, Poulenc’s sonata for flute and piano, Reinecke’s Ballade in D minor, and some of JS Bach’s sonatas. Currently I’m working on Reinecke’s concerto for flute and orchestra, Roussel’s Joueurs de flûte, and Alfredo Cassella’s Sicilienne et Burlesque. Do I stand a chance against the competition?
I think your teachers at the conservatory are the ones to ask.we can’t hear you play even if any of us are knowledgeable about music. It all hinges on your auditions anyways. Good luck
It’s very possible this student doesn’t want to discuss transferring with their current applied flute teacher.
Post your question in the music major section of this forum…here is the link

Someone there will be able to tell you if these schools even take transfer students. As you know…flute is highly competitive with many, many more applicants than seats at most programs. Curtis and Juillliard are very very competitive programs for admission.
It also depends on the number of spots. Sometimes there is one or even none for freshman admission. No harm in trying but make sure you have other options. or perhaps you can also make your current school work and then apply to grad schools. (Curtis has a diploma as you probably know.)
@jttflute : You’ve been through conservatory auditions before and know what to expect in terms of professor availability / number of openings etc. Assuming that you are an excellent player, and audition well, Juilliard is not out of the question. However, for Curtis, you need to have a PERFECT audition - and that advice came from a very well known musician.
Hope this helps. Wishing you the best !
