Hi everybody, I’m a chinese student who is now currently planning to apply to Emory University on ED1. I have a TOEFL of 110, old SAT 2100 superscored, and I study IB and my predicted score maybe a 35 or 36 out of 42. I have been to Emory’s precollege program this summer and I got a recommendation letter from one of Emory’s professors. Also, I have a kickass personal statement essay on basketball about how it changed my life and winning my school a championship. I just want to know what are the odds for me to get into Emory because I really like the school.
I think you a have a pretty solid chance. Your SAT is a bit above Emory’s average, although it would be good to get your score up to their 75th percentile for an even better shot, which is 2200. The fact that you’re getting a recommendation letter from an Emory professor certainly helps, but don’t rely on that too much.
Do you have any other extracurriculars besides basketball? How about leadership positions, awards, etc. You can’t be lacking in those areas if you want to get into a top school like Emory.
Hi, thanks for replying. I am also the varsity basketball captain of my high school. I have also won several regional titles for my school in basketball. I also do a little bit of debate and won one state title. Can these improve my chances?
@WFLMSer : If you sell them properly, yes…but note that Emory has been into increasing intellectual vitality of its student body, so you may want to find some way of demonstrating a passion for learning/academics. Athleticism is great, but even those admits (playing varsity) tend to be quite the academic and intellectual powerhouses. This is a prime example of what they look for: http://emorywheel.com/andrew-wilson-olympic-trials-begin/ . Sell your athletic and academic passion. Avoid coming off as the standard high achiever. Show that the achievements in both arenas come from more than merely a disposition toward achievement.
Thank you for your advice. I’m also planning to apply to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on ED2 if I don’t get into Emory on ED1.
What is your opinion on this school?
How is RPI compared to Emory in mutliple areas such as academics, social life, and facility? I’m still not sure what I’m going to study in college, but it is either Applied Physics, Enginnering, or Pre-Med.
Which school you think I should go to according to my circumstances?
Is RPI worth of ED2 or should I leave it in RD?
Also, does RPI still have a very high male female ratio? Will it be boring and affect my social life in RPI?
What other schools you think I should apply to besides Emory with my grades and personality?
THANKS!!!
RPI and Emory are quite different. RPI obviously is more tech-oriented, while Emory is more of an all-around outstanding university. I think that Emory has a stronger overall academic reputation than RPI does.
For social life and facilities, read about them. You should also be able to find out about RPI’s male:female ratio by searching online.
Here is a link to some info on RPI:

And here is one for Emory:

There are definitely more females, by %, at Emory.
@prezbucky Thanks for your information, but which school you think I should go to according to my circumstances?
Is RPI worth of ED2 or should I leave it in RD? Also, do you like RPI better than Emory or vice versa.
There is nothing wrong with applying ED1 to Emory and ED2 to RPI.
I think Emory is a bit better overall but RPI is probably a bit better in some STEM areas. But you should read about the specific programs you are interested in at each school.
