Hello,
I’m french (female), I live in Paris. I'm 15, I skipped the 3rd grade. I’m in 10th grade so I haven’t taken the SATs yet.
I’m at EAB school, which is a bilingual school.
I’m fluent in french, english, and I also speak italian and spanish (but not fluently).
I had the high honors the last semester. Next year, I’ll take bac S, which is the hardest bac (aka IB). The 10th grade is divided in 5 parts, the one I am is the hardest of the five and I’m on the top 3.
My 9th grade wasn’t successful because , I had an operation because of the detachment of the retina of my left eye. It really affected me and thus had an impact on my grades.
At school, I participate at the debate club and at the journal.
During march, I went to HMCE (Harvard Model Congress Europe) and I’m going during the next two years.
Since I’m 4, I’m at the Conservatoire du Centre de Paris where I play piano, I do music theory, I take sing courses which give me the opportunity to sing at Theatre du Chatelet, Mairie du III et du IVe, and I do dance which also gave me the opportunity to dance at Theatre du Chatelet and Casino de Paris. Since I’m 8, I do theater, I’ve been at Cours Simon and Cours Florent which are the best in Paris.
I’m also skiing since I’m 5(I had honors/awards), and I play golf since I’m 10.
This summer, I’m going to Columbia’s summer program for high school students where I’ll study the science of psychology. I’ll also do volunteer work during august in NYC.
I’m not doing a lot of volunteer work because associations/hospitals… don’t allow people under 18 to volunteer. But I co-organised and participated at a humanitary jogging at my school.
I'm going to do interships at a lawyer and a cardiologist cabinet during june (2/3 weeks).
I'll take the FEC (Cambridge's First Certificate of English) during june also.
My college choices are : Columbia, NYU, Yale, Harvard and maybe Georgetown or John Hopkins.
Thank you.

I guess we can’t really chance until we get your SAT I + SAT II scores, and GPA/IB/Baccalaureate predicted. However I can say that your application is looking good so far.

One thing you should note is that under the EC/Awards section of the application, they only look at stuff you did between Year 10 and Year 13 (English system) or Grade 9 and 12 (other systems, dunno what system the French follow), well basically, the last 4 years of your life. It shouldn’t really make difference to you though since you have been doing them all since a young age.

I would say, get good scores, keep doing your ECs until the last year of school and make sure to mention that you have been doing activities since the age 8, otherwise they may get the impression that you have only been doing them for 4 years. I would also recommend that you write your essay on the effect your retina had on your grades and life in general and how you responded after your operation.

Nevertheless, Harvard, Yale and Columbia are reaches for everyone. Columbia may be a mid/low reach for you if you do get over 2250 in SAT I and 750 in all your SAT IIs, and maintain your ECs. NYU may be a high/mid target, and I am not sure about Georgetown/JHU but if I had to make a guess, I would say low/mid target.

thank you !
For my essay, I was thinking about this, well, during my 9th grade, I had a lot of problems, operation, and at the end of the year, I almost get raped, hopefully, I ran fast and thanks to my parents, the man has been arrested. Also, my father dropped my mother and me when I was 4, fortunately, I was really close of my mother, and at the age of 10, my father tried to talk to me but I couldn’t do this, at the same year, my grand-father had a cancer, since then, I have to take care of him with my mother, so you see, I have pretty much a lot of background, I think…

There is still a fair bit of information missing from your profile so its hard to say. I would need to see your grades, on average where would you say you are from 1-20 (I assume you still use that scale in France). Without looking at that I would say NYU, Georgetown, and Johns Hopkins are a lot easier to get into (targets) than the ivies which are all reaches. As I side note, I hope you have considered cost. University is not free here and international students get no financial aid, that means about 50k a year. I don’t see why you would come here, you have an excellent university in your own hometown!

Anyone else on this thread, chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/898730-chances-duke-penn-cornell.html

I think you have great chance to get into UCB since your experience is much stronger than mine. You attended so much conference which i did not. Your experience may guarantee you to Columbia. But to get into Yale and Harvard, i think you need much higher test scores and some even more unique experience, or awards and honors. Those schools in top five is rather hard to get into.

Well, my average is 14-15 in the french system. It means “A” when I ask to my english teacher who also controls all the admissions, etc… Well, I don’t want to live in Paris later and my mom always put me in bilingual schools. Hum, I went to Columbia last year and I talked with the director of Law School, he told me that it was ok for financial aid.
Thank you Catboy ! When you said UCB, you mean Berkeley, right ?

Judging from your EC, you’re quite an achieving student, compared to the young French kids I know. Bravo! But I can’t say anything about your college app yet, since you haven’t got any test scores. I’d say you should look at schools in big cities, say Columbia, Penn, NYU Tisch, they got the culture you feed on.

BTW, it has always been a dream of mine, to live and study in Paris. (I’m a Chinese struggling with final college choice) Gotta polish my French lol

Yeah, well, I like to be busy, unfortunately, the french system doesn’t allow us to do a lot of EC’s.
In which school do you want to be ? Sorbonne, Sciences Po, HEC ?

yeah.UCB=Berkeley. In China we always use abbreviations. Financial aid…humm…You’d better not apply for it…More financial aid=less chance for admission. btw, I decided Northwestern, because for undergraduates, NU is better than UCB for academics and professions

Oh okay.
Well, it’s still good, congratulations Hope you’ll enjoy it.

ENS, mais ce n’est qu’un r

Oh okay. I correct what you said : c’est impossible, m
