Hi! I'm a French/American student preparing the French Baccalaureate. I've lived in Italy most of my life but am now in Switzerland. My average has gone from 13 in 9th grade, to 14 in 10th and 15.7 currently. I have a long list of extra-curriculars as well as college prep courses, I speak 4 languages and am learning chinese. I recently scored 1900 on the SAT's but plan to take them again in october. I am still waiting for my scores from the Spanish, Literature, and Math I subjects test.

What do you think my chances for the following schools are?
Columbia
Brown
U Chicago
Vanderbilt
Georgetown
Tufts
Vassar

To be honest, although the French Bac is well-respected by American universities, I have known friends with an average of 18 in fili

I’m in L, with option math, italian and chinese.

In school I have taken history of art and ancient greek as extra classes.
I’ve done two summer courses at columbia: one called “Leadership in law” and the other simply “college prep.” I’ve participated in another course at SCAD for photography and graphic design.
I have many service hours with the Hands on Nashville organisation, and have done two internships, one at the Statesboro Herald and the other at Savannah Connect.

As for sports I have been wakeboarding for 2 years, skiing and snowboarding (which here in switzerland is part of our program during the winter) for many years, I’m currently the captain of the volley-ball team which I have started, and am part of the soccer team.

Other than that, I run the MUN club, we have taken part in one conference so far during which I was the ambassador for my team. I am also running a charity club. I have taken part in the school plays since 9th grade and am part of the school’s food committee. I am also the founder and current editor of the school’s newspaper.
Also in 10th grade my debating team won the competition against all other french schools in Italy.
I am also picked to be school prefect next year.

My average for this term has gone up and is around about 17 (I’ve always been first of the grade this year), and I hope to get my SAT’s up to 2100.

What do you think?

Thank you so much for your help I really appreciate it!!

What would you study at those University ? You probably heard about Sciences Po at Paris (your profile fit really well in) or LSE in London ! Did you consider these choices? I’ll be able to help you for Western Europe and so !

In fact, if you manage a 16 or more on your bac, you have a good chance at King’s College at Cambridge, if you’re interested in politics. Just an option to look into!

How lon hav u been here? It seems that me and u kind of hav the same problem: english so a good essay is essential. And improvement in sat for me i can see bout 150 pnts min exceed work hard on ur sat try act make some clubs like new french club like my new persian club

I was considering the program between Sciences Po and Columbia, but I’m really not sure what I want to study which is my main problem when considering schools in the UK or in France.

Sciences Po, is really great! I live near from and I have some friends who were accepted to… They all told me the intellectual and the campus life were amazing with debates, talks and workshops about almost everything! Nevertheless he admission process is really, really selective. And the campus is located in the heart of Paris (intramuros), Sciences Po had also six others campus all around France. Be carefull Sciences Po Paris also known as IEP Paris is not the same than Sciences Po Bordeaux or Sciences Po Lille ! After Sciences Po you could do Economics in an advanced study, or diplomacy, advertisement, politics and so on!

L students would probably be better off at a LAC.
Some colleges on your list are wild cards for anyone :
Columbia
Brown
U Chicago

You can apply but the odds of getting in are minuscule, regardless of how accomplished you are.
Try to diversity your list. Include women’s colleges in particular and schools where strength in international knowledge/languages is a big plus, like Macalester.

There you have a shot. However for an L student, Vassar may be the best, and Georgetown and TUfts due to your very international experience.
Vanderbilt
Georgetown
Tufts
Vassar

Thank you! What about Duke and NYU?

Duke: you can apply for the Robertson because your life experience may interest them and you can try for the regular admission, but it’s part of the “wild card” schools.
NYU: you have a shot, but do your parents have $60,000 per year you plan to spend in the city? Because NYU is notoriously stingy with financial aid.

I hadn’t heard of the Roberston Scholarship, thanks for that & your advice!
