does NYU (New York university) accept kids with D’s on their high school transcript? I have 3 D’s on mine and they were all in my first 3 semesters of high school. After that last report card that had a D on it I’ve gotten all A’s with a few B’s and my SAT and ACT scores are pretty high. I just wanna know if going to nyu is a long shot since I have D’s on my transcript. (Mind that the D’s were in freshmen year geometry, sophomore year pre calculus and sophomore year chemistry honors which was weighted)
It honestly depends on which school you are applying to- if it is CAS or Stern, then those Ds are pretty damaging to your chances… BUT since you showed improvement, you could probably briefly discuss in your essay why you got low grades in your first 2 years.
If you are applying for Tisch, then your portfolio and artistic ability will have to be stellar- your grades (the Ds may still hurt you) won’t matter as much.
Work on your SATs and SAT IIs (You have taken precalculus, so try preparing for the SAT IIC). Doing well may put direct attention away from those low grades.
Hope this helps.
I applied to CAS…
But some background info on me:
My SAT score was a 2050 the first time I took it and my ACT was a 32 the first time I took it.
I played softball freshman year and then golf and track sophomore, junior and senior year.
I’ve done leadership all four years and have over 1000 hours of community service, I’m also the founder and president of MESA at my school.
I’m a intern/ volunteer at the Stanford Health Center and I’ve interned at Kaiser Permanente.
I’ve taken 3 college classes while I was in high school (algebra 2- B, calculus- B and computer arts- A).
And total for AP courses, I’ve taken 8- one sophomore year (AP European History), 4 junior year (AP Statistics, APUSH, AP language and composition, and AP art history) and 3 senior year (AP Gov/ Econ, AP literature, and AP Psychology)
But with those 3 D’s on my transcript I’m worried no school will accept me. Note that I applied to NYU, all of the main UC’s (Berkeley, Davis, LA, San Diego, and Santa Barbara), Boston U, Chicago U, Georgetown, USC, Columbia, Stanford, and a few other Ivy Leagues.
You certainly have the ability to quite well- your standardized scores are pretty decent. In your essays, talk about those Ds and explain what happened. Since you got those grades at the beginning of your high school career and you improved over the years, it is in your favor.
You definitely have a chance for the colleges you’ve listed. U Chicago, Stanford, Columbia are a bit of a reach but I think you stand a chance for NYU, USC, BU and most of the UCs.
You have good ECs so keep it up- ask your college counselor for more as to what you should do.
