Can I get into UGA? Or at least be waitlisted? And can I get into Georgia State?

Age: 18
Grade: Rising Senior
Ethnicity: Persian
Class Ranking: Middle 50%
Location: North Georgia

My Core GPA based on the UGA Weighting system: 3.12
Unweighted: 3.0
When UGA lists the average percentage of people who range within certain GPA's, do they mean weighted GPA's or unweighted?

My SAT Scores: CR: 500, Math: 640, Writing: 670
I haven't taken the ACT and I'm not sure I will, but I do plan on taking the SAT one more time during my senior year.

I have taken a total of 6 AP classes and 5 honors classes within the last 3 years. I'm taking 5 AP classes my senior year. Also I have gotten an A every year in German, and I'm taking AP German my senior year. I would like to major in German and I've heard it is one of the less popular majors at UGA. So if I put on my application that I want to major in it, do you think it might raise my chances of getting in?

My extracurriculars:
Clubs:
Student Council
National Art Honor Society
National German Honor Society (I'm Secretary)
Key Club (I'm Treasurer)
Habitat for Humanity (I started it at my new school during my junior year)

Service Work:
Volunteered at a Diabetes clinic between January 2009- May 2009
Volunteered at a rehabilitation center for three weeks during my winter trip to Iran in December 2009
Volunteered at a small clinic in Atlanta from March 2010- May 2010
Participated in 2 Build days for Habitat for Humanity during the 2009-2010 school year
I've also done a few other small jobs such as starting Haitian and Chilean relief fundraisers for Key club, and organizing a Christmas market for National German Honor Society.

Awards: I received honor awards in both AP Art and German.

When I first started high school I didn't receive the best grades ( I got 3 C's my freshman year) because I had gone from having all on level classes in 8th grade to honors and an AP class in 9th grade. It was a huge step for me. But then each year after that I my grades continued to get better. ( I didn't get anymore C's. I mostly got B's but also a few A's)
Does UGA like to see improvement?

Also I think I can get a very good recommendation from my German teacher. Does that help?

When looking at basic stats ( GPA, scores, etc) it is just a bit of a reach. However, you are very unique and diverse, which is a very important factor these days. I think you have a pretty good chance to get in. Georgia State is a safety for you, you’re guaranteed admission. Good luck to you and chance back please!

Hi! I’m an incoming freshman to UGA and I have a bit of knowledge about the admissions process and what they are looking for in a student. Before I say anything, remember to not believe the myths you hear about UGA’s admission process. Anyways, GPA and rigor of curriculum matter the most to admissions. Don’t get me wrong though, SATs/ACTs are important as well, but GPA is weighted more on decisions. I would suggest increasing your CR score, because they focus a lot on the CR+M combined score. If you are applying Regular Decision, your extra’s will be a very huge factor, since they do like diverse students.

I don’t recommend applying Early Action, if you are choosing to do so. I got deferred from Early Action with CR+M score of 1100 and a 3.7 unweighted GPA. I got accepted later on when I listed all my extra’s …sports, clubs, work experience, etc. and increased my CR+M score to 1140. Also, take as much AP classes! The more you take, the better, since UGA focuses primarily on how difficult a class you take and what grade you get out of it. To answer your question, right now I don’t think you can get in with that GPA. I asked many people at my college orientation what was their GPA, and it was above a 3.6 and SAT’s scores of 1180+ (CR+M) and 1800s with (CR+M+W).

I would suggest taking more AP classes if your school offers more (I only took 4 since my school only offered 6), increase the GPA, and take the SAT just one more time. I definitely know the feeling of worrying if I would get in or not. Stay composed and just remember wherever college you attend, you will succeed if you try your best. Georgia State was my fall back and you will get in fine with those stats. If you have any more questions, you can e-mail me at c.mitchell14x@yahoo.com
