Cornell has a Communication major but it's pretty boring and mostly theoretical (as opposed to the practical aspects of Communication that I should be learning). I wanted to change my major to an Independent Major (Interdisciplinary Studies) where I can choose my own courses and outline. If I do decide to do the Interdisciplinary major, what will my job prospects be like? Does it matter what degree you have when you're trying to go into Public Relations? How do employers view Independent Majors from Cornell (or other Ivy League schools)?

I'm very confused. I don't know if I should go ahead and major in Communication or change my major altogether.

Public relations is a fairly broad field, and although there are many communications majors in it, there are people who majored in varied interests. Don’t forget, you’ll like specialize in one area of public relations, everything from health care public relations to financial public relations. So an interdisciplinary background won’t hurt.

A few suggestions though is to get involved in a media-related extracurricular activity, such as writing for the Sun, WVBR, etc. Press relations and writing are key elements of public relations. Also, take marketing classes in the Dyson (AEM) program. And see what communications classes interest you that pertain to public relations.

Finally, work on getting internships in the field during the summer.
