Can I handle AP Stats class given the following

Hi. I’ll get straight to the point:

I currently hold a 3.91 GPA (However, I am only taking 1 AP level class this year). My course load this year is 8.5 credits (out of 9 max). I’d say I’m confident in my math skills, but I am just worried about the workload.

Will I be able to handle AP Stats in my Junior year given the following:

  • I’ll also be taking Honors Pre. Calc
  • I’ll also be taking AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, and either AP Chem or AP Bio
  • Besides this, my school requires I take a Bible course and an English course

I heard AP Chem/Bio is difficult, but I also heard that AP Micro+Macro is easy. I really do want to do AP Statistics at some point, as I think it will benefit me in the future, cause I’m aiming for an accounting/finance career path. If I choose to take AP Statistics in Senior year, then I will also need to take the course while I have AP Calc, AP Psych, and perhaps AP Eng Lit.

Thanks in advance, and feel free to leave thoughts(?) about the courses above. <3

My D found stats to be very straight forward. She said it was her easiest AP course.

A few comments:

– None of us know you or have an idea of what you can handle academically. Also none of us know the rigor of your HS. I suggest you talk to your guidance counselor and craft an overall schedule that is challenging but manageable for you.

–In general AP Stat is considered one of the easier AP classes. (as is AP Psych).

–My S majored in accounting in college and never took statistics in HS – he took two semesters of statistics in college and was fine. It might be nice to have a background in statistics before you start college but IMO it isn’t imperative.

Every school is different. My kid’s school had a difficult AP Stats teacher, but then his class got a lot of 5’s, so maybe all of his problem sets were worth it.

AP Stats and precalc is a good math double.

Why the Econ double? (Personally not a fan of AP Econ’s since few high school teachers understand the subject, don’t have a quant background, and teh courses are so watered down from Econ at an R1 university.)

I’d recommend AP Chem.

Take it. AP Stats is incredibly pragmatic, and straight forward (as others have mentioned here). Everyone should have some familiarity with statistics, it’s everywhere.

Urged my D20 to take AP Stats. Was reticent, but absolutely loved it.

Take it, you won’t regret it.

Thanks everyone for your input. After reading your replies and thinking through them, I’ve decided to take AP Stats for Junior year.

Hi there bluebayou,

The AP Econ classes are only taught for 1 semester at my school. So most people choose to do double Econ in order to take Econ for the whole year (1 semester Micro, 1 semester Macro). I’m thinking of double econ because I can’t think of another 1 semester course to take  and also, the more APs the merrier! (I think??)

Thanks for your reply
