Hello, I was wondering if I could make VT a safety school:

here are the stats:

ACT: 31

AP's: Span- 5 Eng- 4 US History- 3

GPA:3.38

ECs listed on app: football, track, was in 2 clubs, and work; and tons of Comm. Service and will write about this in essays

Job/Work Experience: did finances that were really receipts at a family friend's company and also had a job there too

Essays (subject and responses): already started so they should be very good- on two hardships that have come down on me the last 2 years, and my dealing w/ them.

Teacher Recs: better than great

Counselor Rec: great

School Type: Private, does not rank

Ethnicity: Hispanic hopefully this helps a lot

Gender:M

Also: Took 3 summer courses at a local comm. college

Your stats are almost exactly the same as mine (30 ACT, 3.4 GPA, also Hispanic, varsity bowling for 3 years) and I am making Virginia Tech a semi-safety for me (but will most likely attend due to cost). However, I am also applying to my state school as a definite safety.

No. Your GPA is too low to make VT your safety. Not that you don't have a chance or that it's even less than 50/50, but unless it shoots up a lot when you factor in weighting it won't be enough to guarantee admission.

It is good to see that you are making a point of applying to schools that aren't all reaches. But, I agree with chuy in that your GPA may be on the low side for VT to qualify it as a safety. It also depends on which program/major you are declaring (if you are ready to do that).. ...

I remember sitting in the information session last Aug. and having one of the admissions counselors say that they wanted A-/B+ GPA's for admissions, unless it was for engineering or architecture when it shot up to A/A- range. Because VT had over 20K applicants she also said that they don't even look at rec letters, and the essays are not viewed as heavily as with a smaller school. They just can't read through all of them with all of the apps, she said.

She said it went: 1. rigor of hs curriculum 2. GPA then 3. test scores........My s's GC said it seemed that a 3.7 was kind of the cutoff point for in state admits. Your ACT score -yea! :) for you- should help a lot, but again I wouldn't count this school as a sure fire safety. Hope this info helps. Best wishes and good luck to you!

And please understand, I'm not saying you won't get in. I'm just saying, your safety(s) should be schools where you are absolutely sure you'll get in and that you can pay for. So maybe an in state school that you're guarenteed admission for due to test scores or something. It's fine to have low matches in the mix as well, but you really, really want to have at least one school as an "all-hell-breaks-loose" alternative to a CC or sitting out a year.

Its a match, I wouldn't say you couldn't get in, but that GPA hurts. I would bet that you could get into the school, but to get into Architecture or Engineering, its a pretty solid match that could go either way in my opinion.

This is not a safety. Where do you live? My son was declined with a 3.4 gpa, 30 Act., 6 APs, 4 honors, lots of ECs. (We are from Northern VA, if you are oos or from rural VA, I think you'll get in. But I agree not for Engineering or Architecture.)
