Hi guys,

I'm a sophomore about to finish 10th grade in Massachusetts, and I probably will have a 2.7 cumulative GPA by the end of my sophomore year. I can do better than that and I'm going to a public school and plan to take lots of AP and honors courses to boost my GPA after going to a christian school and not taking tough courses. If I can boost my GPA the way I want it to, I think I can get a 3.5 cumulative GPA after my junior year. If I get great SAT and ACT scores, could I get into UF?

Anything is possible in the spectrum of oppurtunity. Though academics is your sole priority in the process of acceptance, it is not your only priority. UF vests heavily on extracurricular activities from what I heard. You should fill your application with respectable EC’s to provide leniency for your GPA. However, do not let EC’s overwhelm you. Good luck.

See the below link. This is using UF’s weighted GPA (.5 extra for honors, and 1 point extra for AP, so a B in an AP class is worth 4.0).

[University of Florida - Admissions](Freshman - How To Apply - University of Florida)

With that being said, only 8.8% of admits had a GPA below 3.69. You’re chances go up once you’re in the 3.7 to 3.99 range (36.5%). The criteria are also higher for an OOS student.

Great SAT/ACT scores can help, but UF does put more weight on GPA (and class rigor). Great EC’s and Essay may help even more than the SAT/ACT score.
Otherwise your best chance may be as a transfer student (after earning your AA).

Good Luck!

okay, how would you say my chances are though on a scale of 1 to 10 if I get a 3.5 GPA and good SAT/ACT and great EC’s of getting into UF?

I think what you need to understand is that UF is super-competitive for in-state students and maybe more so for out of state students. My son got in but I know a lot of kids from his school with similar stats. You need the GPA, test scores, great ECs and a solid essay and even then, there is no sure bet. The Admin we spoke with on our tour said that to really focus on the essay (if you have everything else in line) because often times that is what can set you apart. Good Luck!

With an UF GPA of 3.5 (weighted)? Based on the last group of freshmen, I would say 10-15% (at best, with a margin of uncertainly that’s off the charts…).

Like sophieandlola said, focus on that 500 word essay (and EC’s), and make the holistic admission process work for you.

Also, treat UF as one of you “reach” schools. If you get in, great; if not, no biggie.

Next year is very important, as it’s sets your final high school GPA for admissions. Put in your best effort to raise your grades and it will pay off (if not at UF, at another fine university).

Good Luck!

That should say kids with similar stats who were declined!
