In middle school, i was really involved in robotics. I had robotics as a class in 6th grade using the Lego Mindstorms RCX and was part of the FLL (First Lego League) robotics competition using the Lego Mindstorms NXT in 7th and 8th grade. I helped to design a robot that helped the two teams in our school rank first and fourth place in the first level of competitions (sorry if this isn't clear. the competition takes place in a specific area and i don't want to reveal my location).

I loved robotics, but I didn't actually continue with robotics because i was too old to enter FLL again (age range is 9-14, so mainly elementary and middle school kids are in it) and my school doesn't really have robotics. However, I went to a summer program at a local college and they had robotics. I really enjoyed this and realized how much I loved robotics after forgetting all about it in 9th grade.

i know that EC's done in middle school aren't really important in college applications unless you continue doing them in high school. but since i didn't significantly continue doing robotics in high school, can i still put it down as an EC?

If you didn’t continue doing robotics, I don’t think you should include it. It doesn’t reflect current interests or recent achievements.

I do think that somebody who achieves something very impressive in middle school might want to list it–for example, if you are musician who was on From the Top, or if you had a book published, or something like that. But a team prize in a regional competition in an activity that you didn’t continue–probably not.

@Hunt thanks for the reply. but i’m thinking about taking up robotics either on my own (i have a kit at home) or starting a club at school (might be a problem because kits are expensive). if i do this, will i be able to put it down? i think i should mention that i’m a rising junior and have about a year before i apply to college, so i’m not trying to do this at the last minute to pad my application

While I wouldn’t include an EC from middle school that wasn’t continued in college, I do think it’s legit to mention that your high school engagement in (and future commitment to) robotics is an extension of interest that began in middle school in an essay.

thanks so i can’t put it down as an EC unless i commit to it in junior and senior year. and it does make an interesting essay topic, but only if i continue with it.
