Can I qualify for in-state tuition?

I currently live in Maryland however my parents moved to North Carolina in March 2014. I know for the first year (or semester?) I have to pay out of state cause it hasn't been 12 months..but my question is can I qualify for instate tution in NC my sophomore year if I'm moving with them after I graduate high school on May?

Each school/state has their own definitions of residency. You’ll have to check with the individual school on how they classify it. You’d definitely have OOS tuition for the whole first year though. Maybe 2 depending on the timing.

Contact the school itself. There are no guarantees, but in some cases you can appeal the OOS status and it can be worth the effort. In my case, my father transferred due to a government job transferring him and I was able to appeal and get in-state.

I think you would get instate tuition for your soph. year onward if your parents have lived in NC for a year or more… It’s easy enough to call the admissions office of any state u. in NC and find out for certain.

I believe that you need to submit your prior year’s tax form when you submit your FAFSA, which means that you are probably submitting your tax forms from 2013-2014 for the 2014 - 2015 school year. So if your parents’ tax forms say that they are paying North Carolina’s taxes for the 2013-2014 tax year, then you will probably qualify for in state tuition. The reason that you pay less for in state is because of the taxes; thus, it all depends on which state they pay their taxes to.
