My first quarter GPA is 1.9.. It's horrible, I know. Is there hope for me to get into med school?? Also, what is the average fall quarter gpa for incoming freshman?

pumpkins, a lot of students do better in college as the years go on. In many cases, including people who are admitted to top graduate programs, the grades get better as the years go on. The first semester/quarter is a big adjustment, a new pace and new expectations. Having said that, there are some students who learn that they are not into (or not particularly adept) at particular subjects and end up going in other directions.

Believe it or not, many of my upperclassmen friends say that FIRST QUARTER FRESHMAN YEAR i the quarter that trips everyone up. You’re in the middle of a transition, you’re not used to UW’s course load. In upcoming quarters, you are better prepared.

So… I take it that majority of UW students end up with a low gpa first quarter… I guess it’s a bit of a consolation. But REALLY?? It’s so low… Right?

Does anyone know what the average gpa of first quarter for newly admitted students is?

I don’t know about your GPA, but you can definitely work on an upward trend.

Yes, I think first quarter freshman tend to get lower grades than they are capable of. I am a freshman and I got a 2.7 (would be much lower if I didn’t take Psych101, got a 4.0 in that).

Also, watch your GPA. If your cumulative GPA is under 2.0 during any quarter you are put on academic probation and you have one quarter to raise it above a 2.0 or else you lose your financial aid. Since this is your first quarter at UW you will be put on academic warning. If you don’t get a 2.0+ you get put on academic probation, and then after that you lose your aid.

So:

academic warning (since you are a first quarter freshman)–> academic probation –> lose aid

You should really only take 2 really tough classes at most and then 1 easier class. If you’re taking 3 tough classes that would explain your low GPA. Anyone will get a very low GPA if they took like Calc, Chem and Phys (if this is even possible) in the same quarter. Next quarter take 1 tough class and 2 easy ones to get your confidence and GPA up. Good luck.
