Nahh dude just think about it. It’s all averages. It sure didnt help you but if you were to get a 3.3 (an A and 2 B’s) for the next 2 quarters there, youre up to a 2.8. Keep that going youre easily up above a 3.0 before you graduate. Youre fine.

Yes, you screwed up. I honestly don’t even know how you did that bad; if you maintain that average, you aren’t going to get a degree (you need a >=2.0 for any major I’m pretty sure). Try actually going to class.

I got a 1.9 my first quarter here. I did loads better at community college. The transition is hard.

That’s because community college is 10 million times easier than an average university. Doesn’t excuse a GPA under 2.0 though; you seriously had to have not tried at all in any of your classes to go that low.

It’s a hard transition from a community college, but if you really work hard to refine your study habits, you can definitely do it! My friend just transferred in from a community college where he took one class per quarter for a whole year. No doubt he got 4.0s in those classes, but his first quarter at UW went so terrible that he switched out of Engineering completely. This isn’t saying you can’t slack off at UW, but if you do, you’ll need to buckle down and work really hard come exam time.

pumpkins, don’t completely freak out. what classes did you take first quarter? perhaps you took a combination that required too much study time for you, or they were 3 maths/sciences classes and you didn’t realize you couldn’t handle it. don’t completely freak out. be smart when registering for later quarters. throw in some random VLPA or other gen ed class to be ‘GPA buffer’ and a fun class to take. over the quarters, you will see your GPA rise, assuming you do well.

are you guys serious? hahaha thats like saying if the other team in a sport scores the first point 1 second into the game that teams going to lose. Its one quarter out of many still to come. Sure its gonna bring him down a little bit but hes fine as long as he does well the rest of the time.

Similar problem with me. First quarter of college right out of high school and I got 2.6 GPA. Honestly I feel like I was being too ambitious by taking Chem 142 and Math 125 in the first quarter even though I didn’t pass the AP Chem exam and barely passed the AP Calc AB (3).

My grades throughout the quarter:

1/3 though the quarter GPA
1.7 Chem 142
2.9 Calc 125
1.7 Psych 101

2/3
2.3 Chem 142
1.7 Calc 125
2.4 Psych 101

3/3
2.4 Chem 142
1.8 Calc 125
3.6 Psych 101

What bothered me was that I had a 2.9 GPA in Calc after the first midterm but since I payed so much attention on my Chem grade (1.7) I didn’t get a chance to learn new Calc material that I didn’t learn in AP Calc. And even though I studied hard from Chem I only got slightly above average on the 2nd Chem mid/final.

Excuse the late response…

@Azwolg: I did not skip class-okay maybe once or twice I overslept and missed my 830 chem class but that’s about it.

@speedsolver: My first quarter schedule went like this: Chem 142, Math 124, Psych 101.
The GPAs for each class was: 2.4, 2.3, 0.7, respectively. Basically, math ruined my GPA…

To the rest: So I take it that this is not too bad as long as a upward trend shows on my transcript??

Thanks again everyone.

You got a 0.7 in Psych 101? That would a class that you should be getting like a 3.0+, at least, to boost your GPA.

But the good news is this probably is the best case scenario for a person with a 1.8 GPA. You got a satisfactory grade in both Chem and Math AND you just passed Psych which gives you your VLPA credit. Just get above 2.0 next quarter to avoid any problems with the Financial Aid Office.

Colleges expect students to not do so well in their first quarter of freshman year so its expected. I know a lot of people who are in the same situation (some possibly worse) than you. I also screwed up my first quarter :O… Just make sure to work hard in your future quarters. Colleges like to see positive trends. It also looks really good if you do better in a tougher class (example since you didn’t do so well in Math 124 if you were to do well in Math 125 it would look good).

Bottom line though: What’s done is done. Move on. Work hard. Play hard B).

Haha sorry it was the other way around. 0.7 in math and 2.3 in psych
