Can I see teacher's recommendation letters and Secondary school report???

Hey guys, I am just curious if I can view any of those before sending them out.

It depends on how your school and recommenders operate. I think there is a section where you waive or don’t waive the right to see the recs. SOme recommender will let you see anyways, but if you waive, you lose that right. Your secondary school report, you should examine and make sure is correct.

@cptofthehouse‌ thanks! so do you mean that my recommenders (include my counselor) might waive my right to see their recs? As for my secondary school report, should I ask to examine after my counselor’s done? well, there’s a part asking for my personality and things like that, will counselors in general want students to view that??

After the submission of the secondary school report, will I be able to view it?? Can my counselor make an update later on?

This is actually a common misconception – waiving one’s right to see letters of recommendation only impacts the right to see them after enrolling at MIT (or any other school). Your recommenders can choose to show you your letters or not prior to the application, but that isn’t affected at all by whether you’ve waived your right to see them or not.

@DivineE, whether your counselor and/or recommenders choose to show you their reports is up to them. Many teachers and counselors prefer to keep the letters and reports confidential.

molliebatmit, as is her wont, is entirely correct. Students currently at MIT can access their file, and see their LoR, though not many choose to do so (after all, the letters were good enough to get the student into MIT). This is the only right affected by the waiver. Students who are not accepted, have no such right, and therefore the question of waiver is irrelevant. You also have no right to see letters before they are sent.

@molliebatmit‌ so it means that I am NOT able to see my secondary school report…okay… well, is there any way I can ask my counselor to see it? She already submitted it. I just want to make sure that she had explained the kind of courses I took.

@DivineE, you can ask, but don’t be surprised if the reaction is not positive. Imagine yourself in the position of recommender; there would be a chilling effect if the subject could ask to see it. In your case, she might have a different explanation of the kind of courses you took than you do, which is within her job description. Did you guys speak before she did the recommendation?

No, it doesn’t mean that you’re not able to see the report. It means that it’s totally up to your teachers and counselors to decide whether they’d like to show you or not. Nothing on MIT’s end implies that you must or must not be allowed to see it.
