I just finished my freshman year. It was quite bad and I did not meet the UT CAP requirement. I graduated within 15% of my high school class and was in several honor societies including the NHS. I also did very well on my SAT. I thought the college I attended was too easy and did not care about it and totally screwed up. I regret and really want to start over again. Is it OK if I go to another college and retake all the courses so that these bad grades won't be on my record forever? The past year would just be wasted. I've read so many posts about people having bad grades in the past and no matter how much they tried they just couldn't bring it high enough to be accepted by UT. I really want to study hard and go to UT to pursue my dream. Please help!!

This is probably the first time ive heard of someone screwing up CAP. I guess you werent ready for the college life? You should be able to retake all the courses at a CC(call to make sure), but this will slow down your 4 year graduation. Keep your head up and do whats best for you.

What CAP school did you go 2? aside from your college being too easy, why do you think you didnt meet the requirements?(what exactly happened)

because I did not make 3.2. My gpa is 3.0 now. It will be hard to bring it up to at least 3.5 by December.

I plan to apply UT early next year after I retaking all the courses. Will I be able to just send the grades I’ve retaken from my new college or do I still need to send this year’s transcript from my current college? Please help me with this. Thank you.

Retaking classes because you got a 3.0 seems like a waste of time – the admissions officers might even frown upon this. I would just apply to UT as a transfer student after completing two more semesters with 4.0’s.

A 3.5 is a safe bet for getting into any major at UT except business and architecture.

Just make sure you take your studies seriously and plan your essays in advance.

I hate to bring you down but consider going to another school other then UT Austin. There are several good options other then UT in Texas so look into it.

You also need to sit down and figure out why your GPA is what it is and go from there. If you have any questions or whatever feel free to PM me and I’ll try to do the best I can to help you out.

Good Luck :)

what CAP school did you go to?

I go to UTA (Arlington).

@Startagn- You will have to submit transcripts from all the colleges you attended when applying to a new school. Although the old grades won’t “go away”, positive trends are a good thing! I agree with rp, instead of repeating your entire first year, focus on doing well as you continue to move forward.

@Pierrechn - At my school, only about 1/3 of CAP students go on to UT. About 1/3 don’t fulfill the contract and about 1/3 decide to stay.

My biggest dilemma is I have so many AP credits and I am running into a situation that I am almost done with the core curriculum. I really don’t have many courses to take in the community college or UTA next semester since I really want to transfer to UT. I probably will repeat those courses I made C and take a language course. Do you think this is a good approach?

Dont worry about what @alli4real said, he transfered to UT with a 3.4. It shouldnt be to hard to get a 3.5 by december, take a summer course or 2.

btw a 3.0 isnt bad for your first year, even if you didnt meet the CAP requirement.

Maybe you should take the courses you have AP credit in and try to get a 4.0 in them.

You do have to submit all grades from all colleges attended so I don’t see the point of retaking those classes at a different school

This is a great idea. Actually I am taking English 1301 during Maymester and plan to take 2 others in summer 1 and another 2 in summer 2. I will also take about 15 credits next fall. It will bring my GPA up to 3.5 by December if I work hard and get all As. They all will be either those I made C or those I have AP credits. Thanks all of you for giving me suggestions. It makes me feel so much better. :)

A 3.00 GPA isn’t that bad. If it was too easy, you should have had a 4.0 lol (jk). But yes, if you do get your GPA up to a 3.5, you should be good for UT for Spring '11. Good luck.

Have you ever thought about getting your undergrad degree at another university and going to UT for graduate school? A 3.0 isn’t bad, but if you say you are almost done with your core and you are considering retaking classes, it seems like you are spending a lot more time on undergrad than need be. I can definitely understand why you really want to go to UT, that is why we all did CAP. But, at some point, striving for UT wil become detrimental and costly. There are many other schools that you can get a good education at.

My mom did all the analysis to me and suggested I either stay at UTA or transfer to UTD. I thought about it but I really want to give it a try. My older sister graduated from UT last year. My younger sister will go to UT this fall. I thought I would too but… Now that I learned from my mistake. It’s a lesson well learned with big price!!

UTD is a pretty good school as well…it is selective and everything, 52% acceptance rate

I will add once again that staying where you are at is going to benefit you in the long run. The rest is up to you.

Hes only going to be a sophomore, you transferred in so why are you downing him?

@OP

you act like you cant transfer to another school besides UT, depending on your major it might be beneficial to stay at UTA like Alii said. There are plenty of other schools in Texas, i suggest you look at them. If you want to stay on track dont retake the courses, just get better grades.

I really don’t think anyone is “downing him,” Pierre. They are just offering advice, that in this situation seems fitting. UTD is a good school, just make sure that that is truly where you want to go and graduate.
