I did poorly this freshman year because i got a 2.85. Do colleges really care about how well i did my freshman year. I want to go to a really good univeristy but im not sure if i can do that anymore because i messed up this year. Do i still have a chance to get in a good univeristy??

how good are your grades now.

I only did freshman year and i got 3.0 first semester and 2.7 2nd semester. Im going to be a sophmore next year.

so that puts you at a 2.85...if you can get all As from now on, you can graduate with like a 3.7...that's good. Start studying hard.

okay thanks.. anyone else?

A lot of colleges don't really consider freshman year. And if you have an upward trend, then it'll be even better.

So no, your chances at a college college aren't doomed.

what's ur definition of a "good" college? and 2.85 freshman year isn't that hard to rebound from. if you have shown improvement and do well on other aspects of your record, you'll do fine/

Princeton and Stanford don't look at 9th graade grades -- there's still chance for us! :)

No single element of your application will necessarily sink your acceptance, but you must admit to being at a disadvantage to people who have straight A's this year.

As always, grades are not everything, especially freshman year grades. If you pick it up, not necessarily all A's, but better than you got this year, most colleges won't care at all.
Just concentrate on bringing up your grades, and participating in activities, getting leadership positions, maybe some awards, all that good stuff.

(With a great essay and improved academics, I wouldn't worry at all.)

PS: Why are you on CC when you're only a sophomore!? :)

kinglin those are average colleges. They aren't good or great, well at least not in my opinion.

how the hell did you get a 2.85 freshman year? Freshman year is the easiest year, and its not going to get any easier sophmore, junior year... Either you shouldn't be taking really challenging courses, or you slack off too much... IF you felt you worked your butt off freshman year and still got a 2.85, consider taking CP classes.

Go-vibe is right: Are you sure you're really going to improve? It's not going to get easier. You'll have to excel in rigorous courses to have a chance at top-notch colleges. But if you keep your focus on your studies (and remember to have some ECs about which you are passionate) you'll pull through and you'll be fine.

yeah, if you
re grades keep inproving ,you
ll be fine

Freshmen year will be ok. As everyone has said, just keep an upward trend. If you were trying and got a 2.85 it might be a good idea to get a tutor and do some summer review of last years material. If you were just slacking off, then you'll need to kick that habit - it's not that easy to be honest. I have many friends who vowed to try harder and they could never get out of their habits.

I had a pretty bad sophomore year, but I rebounded and got into some decent colleges, so you have a chance.

Don't worry. I had a 2.91 freshman year and now I'm in the running for val because I cleaned up my act quick and started taking school seriously. Take honors and AP classes to boost your GPA if your school does this.

I hate to be the down side but where exactly do you want to apply? I mean if you can rebound yourself you should be okay, but I know that some colleges (at least Cornell) look at freshman and sophmore grades greatly, they like to get a feel of how you work in the transition stages, because you can't go to college and suck. I know this isn't what you want to hear but I am telling the truth.

Is it that you weren't trying very hard? Because I found Freshman year soooo easy other than a little adjusting but still managed to pull off a 3.8 UW GPA at a new school where I didn't know anyone.

Anyways try really really hard and you should be fine!

Freshman HS year can be hard (adjusting to new demands, etc. Or getting slammed with a bad teacher & flat out tough teacher too!) so as long as your grades keep going up you should be good. Keep the ACT & SAT in mind too, so if you do really good on those, maybe they'll make up a little for a not so good freshman year.

some colleges dont look at feshman year grades, stanford, duke, and University of Michigan are a few....so i would say if you work really hard and improve the next 2 years especially, youve definitely got a shot

The UC's don't either.
