Can I still get into MSU?

To start with my HS is top 10 in the state and doesn’t publicly use a ranking system. Basically will a very strong upward trend in GPA, a 3.0 from Freshman year to a strongish upward trend give me at least a shot? Not a match, but a shot at getting in?

Freshmen, basically addicted to video games, no motivation:
-Biology: 3
-Honors Geometry: 2.5
-Civics and Econ: 3
-ELA 9: 3
-Gym: 4
-Health: 4
-Spanish: 3
Total GPA: 3

Sophmore
-AP Chemistry: 1, in my essays I mention how at the time I took on a class only because I was pressured into it, and unfortunately was unable to do well bc of family reasons, unfortunately I ended up getting B’s first semester in everything else and D in alg2, I know, I had an absolutely awful first semester
-Physics: 4
-Spanish: 4
-APUSH: 5
-Honors ALG 2: 4
-ELA 10: 4
(Tested out of AP Psych, got a 5)
Total GPA: 3.0(UW)
Basically I dropped AP chem and honors math, will this decision make it impossible for me to get into MSU?

Junior, I took the best classes I could while maintaining a 4 gpa for the sake of upward trend. Bear in mind that some of these classes are only a single semester.
-Anatomy: 4
-IB World: 5
-Genetics: 4

  • Pre-Calc: 4
    -AP Lang: 5
    -: IB Business: 5
    -Computer programming 1&2: 4
    GPA: 4

Senior, what I’m taking next year.
-AP Bio
-Calc
-IB Business:
-AP Lit: 5
-Med Career:
-AP Comp:

  • Finance 1:

Rec’s: Teacher #1, awesome rec, connected to out hospital and is genetics and hosa coach, really liked me
Teacher #2, talks about natural talent toward writing? Says I will do well wherever I go, AP Lang teacher
Counselor, talks about I persevered, knows me really well, I spent a lot of time venting in there sophomore year

ACT Score: 32

End GPA: 3.5

EC’S:
-HS XC 1 Years
-Forensics Team, Finalist
-H.O.S.A, “All State” for my specialization
-Volunteer 175 hours, then working at my local major hospital
-Auditorium Technician(1 year)
-Border Patrol, held a leadership position
-Fencing, number one in my region, all age groups in one pool

Potential Advantages: Parents are immigrants? In-state for University of Michigan Medical School and MSU
Had a massive upward trend, kinda turned my life around, And I tend to write killer essays, Forensics team was for public speaking training.

Michigan State? Have you looked at the common data set? You are in unless you’re awaiting trial for a major felony.

@greeninohio‌ really? I have studied their acceptance religiously,I’m just super worried that my awful first 2 years will screw up everything else, thank you!

Google Michigan State common data set. The average ACT score for incoming freshmen is something like 26 and the acceptance rate is over 60%. It is not a difficult school to get into with a 32 ACT and a GPA over 3.

@greeninohio‌ I was just confused bc at my school kids with 4.0’s and 34’s go there and so I was just puzzled by how they have such a wide performance base, thanks for your help!

They might go there for other reasons, close to home possibly or something like that, maybe they just love the Spartan sports teams… you might not get in as easily as them but you should get in nonetheless, and that’s really what matters in the end.

This link might help ease your doubts… green means attending, blue means they were accepted but won’t attend, and red means rejected.

This is solely numerical of course but you seem pretty strong in other categories so if anything this might actually be underestimating your chances.

Don’t sweat it, and maybe even aim a bit higher if you want.

Acceptance rate is north of 60%. Your ACT is well into the 75th percentile. Your GPA might be a little low, but I would think the ACT makes up for it. Disclaimer: I am not a college Admissions Officer.

I did poorly my Freshman and Sophomore year in HS and I still made it to MSU.

I was accepted with only a 23 ACT and a 3.3 GPA and a killer essay… I honestly didn’t think I would get in at the time but they accept a lot of people now.

@MSUspartan2015‌ Thanks! It’s cool to know that an essay can make such a difference in acceptance!
