So I’ll be graduating with my IB degree. I have no extracurriculars at school other than being part of my school’s National Winning dance team. I became officer a few months before ending my junior year and spent the whole summer attending officer conventions and camps. I also worked. Well, I had to drop the team at the beginning of senior year because I didn’t make enough to pay for my officer position by the due date.
My question is…would it be unethical if I still put “officer” on my college application since I technically was officer and did my officer duties until recently?
Btw, I’m still working to pay off my dues (parents cant afford it) even though I’m not on the team anymore ?.
Usually on the application they separate out positions by the year that you did them so it shouldn’t be a problem
If you are going for a selective college, this would be a relatively weak EC. ECs do not have to be “in school”. Any activities you do outside of studying can count, even if that is babysitting younger siblings, caring for a grandparent because your parents have to work, or holding a job to help your family put food on the table. Applications usually only ask for a few of your most meaningful ECs. You could list dance team if it makes the cut, but I would only list this “officer” position if you have nothing else to use.
So you were an officer for about 2 months?
The leadership they look for isn’t just about titles. In fact, it’s more the fact that you’re working (do you mean a job?) to spare your parents the bill for last year.
You can put Dance in Activities and say, “See Addl Info” where you put a very brief note that say you were appointed, did the summer, and are working… etc. (That sort of thing.) They’ll get it.

Look at the Common App, it has space for 9 or 10 activities. Usually, something like dance would be one line, with a very short explanation. That’s where kids might write, “sr year, officer,” or whatever fits.
It’s not a weak EC, when it’s a team, with practice requirements, competitions, coordination, etc- and a national team, at that… And in parts of the country, these are very important activities to high schools and the region. And at some colleges they have teams or some related things.
Adding: it’s just not a big tip. It’s one of many ECs that can make up a presentation. Just properly assess yourself for what your targets want.
