Can I take a class as P/NP if it is required by my major?

I just flunked my first math 1b midterm and I was wondering if I can take the class as pass or no pass. I'm going to be (hopefully) an econ major, and it says on the major requirement that I can take either 1a-b or the math16 series. My plan is to just take math 1b as pass/no pass and take math 16 for a letter grade. Am I allowed to do that?

hmm i think so.

it’s best to consider a counselor for this because it might just so happen that if you pass 1b, then you won’t even be able to take the 16 series at all (as in it won’t count for anything). but i’m not too sure

batman is right. if you pass a higher level class, they wont let you take the easier version for a letter grade

Two of my friends took the F they got on Math 1B and retook it during the summer to make up for it. You should ask your adviser.

Thanks. But if I do fail it and take it again, does my failing grade get erased completely and is replaced by the grade I receive the second time around?

No, your failing grade does not get erased, it will still be on your transcript. Your new grade however, will be factored into your GPA in place of your old grade.

I have the same question…
I’m actually Pre-Business but Econ is my backup major, so I have to take 1B (but Haas doesn’t require it) next semester. Could I take it for P/NP if I wanted to fulfill the Econ reqs?
