I was accepted to an Ivy as an athlete and was really excited and was looking forward to going but some terrible things happened in my family towards the end of high school, and I ended up taking a gap year for mental health reasons. I am recovering and doing much better now but I’m not sure if I will be ready to start university this august. I am looking for some advice.
Should I just go because a part of me really wants to start? Another part of me thinks I could use another half year or full year, but I’m not sure my school would allow a second gap year in a row. Can they rescind admission because of a health reason? Would the request raise a big red flag? Has anyone here taken two gap years for health reasons or know of someone who has?
I’d contact the college and ask what their policy is.
Are you working with a therapist who can help you out with this? If not, I would certainly see if it’s an option. It’s not clear to me if your wanting to wait a little longer is due to mental health issues, “fear of flying,” or perhaps something else. Finding out your school’s policy (per @happy1) and talking to a therapist and trusted friends and relatives who know you well could be very beneficial in your decision.
It sounds as if you are a thoughtful, bright person who can make a success of your time at college whenever the best start date arrives. Good luck!
Thank you August2019 and Happy1. I am seeing a therapist and trying to work through the problems. I am just worried that the university would rescind its acceptance if they learn that I am not fully well yet. Most schools allow one gap year. I don’t know any that allows two. Just curious if anyone has experience with this here and how your school responded.
