Can I take out a loan for a housing deposit?

Okay, so for NYU, they are going to need a $500 deposit by May 1st and a $1,000 deposit by June 1st for housing... I'll for sure be able to get the 500, but I'm worried about the thousand.. Can I take out my loans early (I'll need about 12,000 freshman year) and just hold the money/pay early for first semester? Because I'm unsure as to whether or not my family can get one thousand dollars by that time... Thank you for your help.

think about this,

If you are starting out, taking loans just for the housing deposit for NYU a school know for horrible FA (I can first hand speak to this), what are you going to go to fill the gap in your FA and come up with money to live in NYC?

While you may love NYU< it may end up being a financially draining option for you.

No one is going to loan **you[/] money as a 17/18 year old with no job or credit history. the stafford loans that are part of your FA package will be paid directly to the school. If anyone will be borrowing 12k, it will be your parents (and you should really be discussing this with them). Even then, the bank will not release money until they verify you are enrolled in school.

I've received about 31,000 in scholarships PER year.. I also got 4,000 work study and a 1,000 grant. The rest is suggested as loans on the package. I'll be taking the Stafford and Perkins, and probably a private loan for the rest.. NYU actually gave me the best package.

Also, what if my parents have bad credit...? (re: bankruptcy)

you can get a bigger stafford loans if your parents are turned down for Plus loans. My son got an amazing FA package from NYU as well. 30K in scholarships (renewable at a modest GPA) and a perkins and stafford loan. I'll still be putting out 12-15K (my EFC was 12K). I'm hoping I can get him into the lower cost dorms (Rubin) or a LCT at hayden.

hey. I had the exact same problem. I know that NYU is a lot of money, but with loans, scholarships, work, etc. i can pay for it, but the $1000 for the deposit was way to much to come up with in a month. My suggestion to you is to call the housing office and tell them your situation wink, wink. They might be able to help you wink, wink.
