My mom finally said yes to NYU, but we'll barely be able to pay for the $800 deposit. If I want to be sure I have a dorm room this fall, do I have to pay the $1000 for housing, or is there a way around it for those who cannot afford it?

Doesnt the 800 include housing? I thought it was like 300 for only tuition and 800 for both tuition and housing

There is no way around the 1000 dollars for the housing. The 800 dollars is your acceptance to the school for both tuition and housing. The 1000.00 guarantees housing. You will have to pay this every year by the deadline in order to keep your guaranteed housing. Once you are late, you no longer have guranteed housing for any year thereafter.
It never hurts to call the school to see if you can pay it differently.

call NYU housing directly and ask. don’t wait.

it SUCKS to be on a waitlist for housing, and you don’t want to be on a waitlist as a freshman. please call as soon as you can.

it’s $800 as I remember.

For those saying it’s $800, maybe I should have been more clear? I meant the payment that is due with housing applications, after the tuition and housing deposits. (The info is here: [NYU > Department of Housing](<a href=“Housing and Dining”>Housing and Dining))

My question was mainly if there was any way around that without simply not paying and being on the housing wait-list. But… it sounds like I’m pretty much stuck? Still, I guess I’ll try and call within the next few days.

I think you are referring to the $1000 deposit for housing for returning students. This is paid in feb for the next year. This does not apply to freshman

no, i know what the OP is talking about. it does say that there is an additional $1000 deposit due in june.

You don’t want to miss the housing deadlines for payment. Having your guaranteed housing disappear is not a good thing, nor is being on the waitlist, particularly if you are a freshman. I do have to ask, though, if you are having difficulty coming up with a $1000 payment, how are you going to pay for the $50,000+ per year at NYU?

you should call up the housing department directly

alwaysamom - My financial aid was decent (and actually better than for the other schools I was accepted into), so the $50,000+ isn’t a big problem. Between grants, scholarships, and stafford loans I only need to come up with about $8,000 a year and my mom is considering a PLUS loan for that. The $1,000 is a problem, though, because it’s due before loan money comes in, and so my parents would have to pay it out of paychecks/savings, which is the money we need to live on.
