Can I take upper-division classes in other departments?

For example, if I'm a math major in Berkeley (Junior/Senior), can I take upper division classes in Philosophy?

Thank you.

Normally you can -- provided you have any required prerequisites.

I already researched this as I plan on taking upper-division Public Policy classes in lieu of a PP minor at Cal if I get into the Rhetoric program. You should be able to just take them without completing any pre-requisites. Keep in mind though that this is for PP classes. You should just go to the website and read into the Philosophy minor (even if you don't plan on minoring in it). Your questions should be answered more fully there.

yes you absolutely can... in fact most departments require that you take some classes outside your major and most do not require any prereqs.... i usually take one class out of my major every semester just to get experience in different areas

As luv said, you basically have to.

I don't know if it's exactly the same for all depts here, but for history you only need 8 upper division courses for the major. This equals 32 units, leaving you needing 28 more units (if you came in with 60) in order to graduate.

This is also why it's pretty damn easy to get a minor in many cases.

Thanks everyone.
Another question, kinda stupid, just wanna make sure.
I can not take lower-division classes, can I?

^ yes you can.

Got it.
Thank you, Edward.

NP.

I do want to let you know that every time I've heard about UD vs LD classes here at Cal...people say the LD classes require way more reading/time than UD.

Some classes are impacted, and they may pick majors first to let into the class. But in most cases it's not a problem.

Thanks guys. Now I know what classes to choose. :)
