As it is, I've already gathered all the necessary transfer forms by using the "Common App" forms, and I'm not willing to go through the whole thing again with Columbia specific forms. Am I allowed to use the Common App forms? Would this hurt my application, or do probably a lot of people do this? They basically have the same exact information..

I’m wondering about this too. I’d rather not have to bother my counselor and teachers again to fill out the forms.

I wonder why Columbia doesn’t accept the CA anyways. I’ve never come across an explanation.

I suspect that either (1) Columbia believes its form of application is superior to the Common Application and/or (2) Columbia is concerned about relying upon a computer data system with which it is not yet familiar and which is out of its control.

So what do you guys think? Is it ok to send in the common app forms for recommendation and the letter of good standing?

I would use Columbia’s forms.

Well, I’m probably not going to apply if I can’t just use the common app forms because I don’t feel comfortable asking my teacher to rewrite the letter of rec, so I’d like to get this info by tonight. Anyone got any opinions?

columbia prefers its forms, but understands that students may not use them (or even that schools have their own forms). the form is preferred because it elicits information that they believe is valuable and makes it easier to process the document.

it means that if you submit the common app forms your application will certainly be read. the actual letter of recommendation is more important (some students just send in the letter without the form attached).

second, i don’t get why you are so rude on here. it is just a one page form they can fill out and heck they can send it to columbia even after they submit the letter of recommendation. i hardly think it is a reason not to apply to a school.

third - the columbia transfer deadline is not until March, so I am not sure where the rush is coming from.

In what way am I being rude? I asked a question pretty straight-forward and can’t understand how anything I’ve said could be interpreted as rude. Maybe the reason I came off as rude is because I felt a sense of urgency, since the payment for the application is due tomorrow and I’m deciding whether or not to apply. I apologize for my tone if it offended you, and that wasn’t my intention.

Anyways, thanks for the response. I’ll use Columbia’s letter of good standing, because it’s pretty brief and I can just give it to a different “college official.” I’ll use the Common Application’s letter of recommendation. I just don’t feel comfortable asking the teacher to write another letter of recommendation, because I’ve already asked him to do two separate recommendations for different events.

arcade, are you applying to columbia college or to the engineering school? since when is the deadline to submit money tomorrow?

[Transfer Admission | Columbia University Office of Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/applications/transfer.php) this says (if you go to application instruction) the deadline is March 15.

I have no idea why I thought that. I could have sworn I read that Part 1 was due January 1st. Let me search a little farther…maybe it was just in my dream or something, haha.

EDIT: Found it. ApplyYourself;

That’s a link to the application instructions on the application itself. It says there that the payment and part 1 must be post-marked no later than January 1st. Actually, it definitely looks like that’s only for freshman applicants. Kinda weird that they don’t specify that though…

yeah, the doc you sent states “this is not a transfer application.” i thought so because all the deadlines and dates refer just to frosh. so this is not the right instruction sheet (the one on the page i sent should be - here is the direct link: http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/webfm_send/121)

i am 99% sure that you don’t need to send in your deposit check just yet. i would email the transfer folks at columbia just to check in (if for some reason i am wrong, you can use your confusion and they probably will understand if you don’t pay in time). tell them you were filling out the application on applyyourself and you the instructions led you to believe you needed to send in your deposit by jan 1.

EDIT: the transfer app instructions on page 2 it says the deadline for giving your money and part 1 is March 15.

I’ll take your word for it. Silly mistake on my part. Thanks!
