Can i work in managerial positions with an accounting degree

I have been thinking of changing from accounting to management as many people are saying that accounting will be replaced by robots. Do u recommend a management degree or accounting . Also can i work in managerial positions with an accounting degree?

I think you’ve made an erroneous assumption that one needs a management degree to become a manager. Managers need technical skills with which to manage within their given industry (generally).

My $.02: your job prospects will MUCH brighter with an accounting degree than an undergraduate management degree. Get some technical skills, you can focus on management with an MBA if need be.

And to answer your question, yes indeed you can work into a managerial positions with an accounting degree.

When I was a continuing education college student (getting my BS at age 40) I had the same question. My advisor told me, “An accounting major can always get work in management, but you’re not going to work as an accountant (at least not a CPA) with a management degree.” As ARC918 suggests, get the technical skills. You’ll be required to take a lot of general management classes anyway.

Accounting, accounting, accounting. CFOs generally got their start in accounting. Get an MBA later at your employer’s expense.

Lots of accountants are managers. Most managers have a specialty other than “managing”; useful ones, anyway.

If you are talking about your undergrad degree, then I agree with the above posters. You need to focus on building a skill set and gaining experience. Management will come later, possibly including an MBA as mentioned earlier.

If you are talking about a grad degree then we would need more info about your background. Either answer might be correct.

I wouldn’t worry about robots. We can automate a lot, but we’ll still need humans for quite a while. Not quite Judgement Day yet.

Managerial positions are granted on the basis of EXPERIENCE, not from a degree.

No one’s gonna allow a kid fresh out of college to be a manager.

Agreed, sticking with accounting is the best bet. You need to come in with a skill, nobody is going to hire a recent college graduate to “manage” more senior, more skilled staff. And certainly you can eventually move into management with an accounting degree.

You will likely have to take some general business classes along with your accounting classes anyway. An accounting degree will be fine.

All facets of business needs accounting, which makes accountants very appealing. Get your CPA and become a partner and you will be all set!
