Does anyone know if LU students from out of the state of WI can declare on their voting ballots that they live in Wisconsin - and therefore their vote would count in Wisconsin? How would this occur? Or who would we ask about this?

Short answer: Yes, out-of-state LU students can register to vote in Wisconsin. LU has voter registration drives at the dining hall, and provide vans to the polls. They make it very very easy to vote here, which is great.

So do you think that a new freshman this Fall, coming from Illinois, can vote as a registered voter in Wisconsin this November? I wonder if there would need to be some kind of waiting period.

No waiting period. You can technically register to vote on election day. I think you need to be a resident for 10 days or something ridiculous like that. You can vote here in November no problem. And why not? Your vote would mean a lot more in a swing state like Wisconsin than in Illinois.

kassos, you got it right. All LU students not from Wi but who can vote, please know that Wisconsin is one of the 18 'battleground states'. Think about registering in Wisconsin.

Well... one thing is... Wisconsin is Obama-country. Well that's for Parent Cafe, but yea... not so much a swing state this year.

What did you mean by a swing state, kassos?

Kerry won Wisconsin by 10,000 votes in 2004. It was close. That's what a swing state means.
