Essays:
Wrote mostly about my disadvantaged life as an underachieving Asian in an Asian-minded school.
Also wrote about how I know that i am naturally smart but need to be given a chance to do well in school.

Note: Anybody who feels like they are at a dead end just needs to really pour out their heart in the applications. If they say things that are taboo, like I did, you will find a lot more honest results given. Heck, I even got a letter back from the Stanford admissions person who read my paper saying “I like your honesty.”

Accepted: UPenn CAS, Harvard, Yale, UC Berkeley (full tuition), UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UCLA (honors program), UC San Diego, NYU (honors program), USC (full ride), University of Washington – Seattle (honors program), San Francisco State, San Jose State

SAT: 760CR 740M 730W
SAT 2: 770 Chinese, 700something US History, 650 Lit

Subjective:
Essays: According to the Yale admissions officer, “There was such maturity in the reflection of your essays. :)” My tip: Be honest about yourself; tell them who you really are. Don’t tell them what you think they want you to say; say what you think means the most to you. For my Yale and Harvard additional essays, I wrote about a time when I met an old man at the bus stop, and he started talking to me about his losing battle against cancer. It was honestly the most depressing moment I’ve ever had to endure, and I did not know how to console him. I could have said something cliched and overused that he’s probably heard from nurses a billion times, but I chose not to. Instead, I simply listened, and I think that helped him more than anything I could have said. In essence, you should retell a story/a moment that really shows who you are, even if it isn’t something academic. They know you do well in school; they know you have a bunch of activities – what they want to know is your maturity, and I, being an avid reader and writer, can easily tell if something is forced, so they, being trained admissions officers, will immediately see if you’re forcing maturity. When I first wrote my personal statements, I kept fretting over the fact that my essays weren’t the peak of academia, so I kept changing words and changing structures, and, by editing like that, my essay lost its voice. So, simply, let it flow.
Teacher Recs: Good, I guess?
Counsellor Rec: Fraught with grammar errors.
Hook: Work exp. with a realtor?
EC’s: Debate, MUN, volunteering, school’s honor society, founded own club that raised $150 for a library, tutoring program, fencing, etc.

Location: CA
School Type: Very Competitive Public that had an admissions process like a college’s (You had to write an essay, and they looked at your grades.)
Ethnicity: Chinese
Sex: Female
strengths: I did very well in all my English courses. But when I was doing my essays, I refused to let any teacher look at them – only friends who read it and told me whether it flowed or not – and I guess I was successful in preserving my voice in my essays.
weakness: My lit score. I didn’t bother retaking any of my SAT IIs because I liked SAT I more than the SAT IIs, and I didn’t know that we needed 3 SAT IIs for privates, so I was like, “eh.” Guess it didn’t matter, huh?

Accepted: dickinson, goucher, sewanee, mary washington (honors program), auburn, ole miss, unca, washington college
Wait-listed: franklin and marshall, rhodes (“high wait listed” - they tell you your rank)
Rejected: american (this was a surprise), vandy, uva, william and mary, washington and lee (early decision)
Attending: dickinson and sewanee and my one and two right now, respectively. we’re just waiting on aid decisions which will really dictate things. if we can’t afford either, i will go to ole miss to study journalism.

GPA: my school does not have gpa’s in the classic sense, nor do they tell you your cumulative high school average. currently, mine is an 89 weighted, 85 unweighted. my grades have been up and down throughout high school, but generally consistent.

Rank: my school does not rank.

SAT: 710 critical reading, 630 math (i know, i know), 650 writing.

Essays: i wrote my common app essay on teaching myself to play guitar in one summer. other essays for supplements were about my passion for writing, my passion for visual art, and an underground newspaper that i started at my school. writing is my “thing”, so i spent a lot of time on my essays.
Teacher Recs: i haven’t seen them, but i’m sure they were great. one of the teachers i chose was one whose class i did not really excel in, but i have a great personal relationship with her.
Counselor Rec: i’m really close with my counselor and he knows me well.
Hook: i’ve done everything i can to further myself in journalism, from internships to my school paper to summer programs.
EC’s: editor of school weekly newspaper, school writing tutor, officer of environmental club, ballet, president of my school’s chapter of the young democrats, school tour guide.
Work experience: 1. internship at local newspaper for two summers. i had about fifteen of my articles published. i sent my schools a portfolio of my work from the internship and from my school paper. 2. internship for a political campaign of a somewhat influential william and mary alum (i applied to w&m). 3. job for my dad’s company.
Courseload:
ENGLISH - two years of ap, two years of honors.

AP Results: took a lot, did alright on them

Notes: I didn’t try my hardest in hs…probably could’ve gotten into some better schools if I studied a bit more and bumped my SATII’s and GPA/Rank up and worked harder on my applications. but whatever, I had fun in hs and will have fun in college so it’s all good
