Hi guys,
I’m a graduating senior who will be attending a California CC next year. Thanks to the 8 AP tests I have/will take, Im able to transfer to a UC after one year at a CC. However, I don’t turn 17 until December 1. This means that I will be admitted as a 17 year old, when I’m sure the expectation for a junior-level student is to be 18. Could this prove to be troublesome at all down the road, even past college admission and graduation? I plan on transferring to either UCLA, UCSD, or Cal, if that makes any difference.
I don’t think it would be a problem. For example, at my boyfriend’s college, his RA was younger than him and had just turned 18 that year despite being a sophomore. My cousin also began college at 17 but she and her mom had to sign a form basically saying she will be treated as an independent adult by the school. So I don’t think it will count against you, there may just need to be extra paperwork. If anything, it may be more impressive that you ARE so young and already graduating high school. I wouldn’t stress about it too much
Hello!
I’m a little late to this convo but really wanted to drop in. I’m 18 and will be (hopefully) transferring somewhere as a junior this fall. I took the CHSPE and graduated high school a year early. I have also been taking college classes since I was a high school freshman. I asked an admissions counselor at one of my applied schools about this and he said most of the time your fellow students won’t care. He also added there are a variety of ages there (young to old) so, nobody really cares about your age.
But, I get the feeling you’re more concerned with admissions. I’m 18 so, I am an adult so, I might not have the same paperwork issues as you but I have some questions asked about my age. If anything, it’ll make you stand out. When the time comes, be sure to write about it/mention in detail in your application. You may have to provide extra transcripts or what not but, in the end, it’ll be worth it.
Best of luck!
There is no issue with your age. My child commenced college at age 17 as a second semester standing sophomore.
The main issue with your age is that you will still need a parent to sign some types of forms until you turn 18.
