Can parent spend the night in dorm opening weekend

My mother is insisting that she accompany me on moving day, but most of the hotels are already booked, except for the luxury ones and we're trying to be frugal. I was wondering if parents were allowed to sleep int he dorm. It just for one night.

no their not allowed. whats check in time for opening weekend?

Laserfox- PMing you.

For freshman- odd floors at 9 AM and even floors start at 11 AM, at least for sons dorm. People will be moving in all day long.

wow thanks guys and crazed for the pm, very helpful!

Freshman move in is on both the 27th and 28th, right? Are most of you going on the 27th? My D doesn’t want to move in until the 28th…I’m hoping it will be a little easier on the second day if most people are going on the 27th but that’s probably just wishful thinking:)

Are most parents really staying over and do you plan on participating in opening weekend events? D said she didn’t see the point and I didn’t make a reservation! Probably much too late now…hoping she doesn’t change her mind at the last minute!

they recommend that you dont invite your parents to stay

bu if you roommate(s) are ok w it then its ok.

however there isnt much space in the dorm rooms (unless you have a large double tripple or quad) so many advise against it.

I booked a hotel close by in Amherst for about $50 a night. Its not a 5 star place, but it should do fine for one night. I plan to let my mother take part in as much activities as she pleases, that way we spend time together and hopefully she’ll feel much more comfortable about leaving me there. I also plan to make the trip to the Niagara falls that weekend. I am moving in on the 27th which kinda sucks cause my b’day is the 26th so I am having a birthday/going away bash with my friends/fam but not on my b’day but the weekend b4 cause I’d be too tired and hungover lol

Don’t leave campus. You’ll miss out on floor, dorm and frosh organized activities. Niagara Falls will always be there.

Batlo, I think the NF falls trip is a UB sponsored thing - seems like I saw it in a brochure they sent. Maybe someone can post more info about it?

Happy birthday laserfox! My D’s in the 28th, which is why she doesn’t want to move in and have us leave on the 27th.

Got the wrong impression OP was planning the N. Falls as a family trip-didn’t know it was a school thing. Thanks for the correction.

thank you sk8mom! I am amazed at how much people I know who have birthdays this month. I just came back from my best friend’s birthday party, my cousin and someone I dated Birthday is also on the 26th!

Yes I was talking about the UB sponsored trip to Niagara Falls.

Laserfox- Glad you got a hotel!! Certainly will not be comfortable for your Mom in the dorm.

We are flying up the 27th and will move in during the afternoon (after we rent the car and drive to relatives house to pick up boxes we left during orientation.) Bed Bath Beyond for our “pick up” of pre-order and then Target. back to dorm. Dinner out with son. 28th- grocery store and any last minute needs. Lunch, hugs, goodbyes (and tears for me!). Afternoon flight home. No need for us to attend UB stuff. I want my son to go and meet other kids, etc…

My husband and I went to Niagara Falls during orientation. Not far and worth the ride (students with UB or some other date) and parents by yourselves. The falls are incredible and Maid of the Mist was a riot! Great town and gardens to walk around. Not terribly far from campus.

Sounds like a good plan, crazed. We’re not that far away so I’m hoping to get it all done on the 28th and leave so D will feel more inclined to participate in activities. Hopefully a quick trip to Wegman’s for groceries will suffice.

Found the Niagara Falls thing - it’s in a small white trifold card that came in the mail. It’s on the 29th and looks like it’s a choice between the outlet mall, touring the city of Buffalo, or going to Niagara Falls and Niagara casino. Thay don’t say which side of Niagara Falls they’re visiting but I think the casino is in Canada and my D hasn’t applied for her enhanced DL or passport yet, so that’s out. Odd that they don’t point that out in the brochure…Anyway, just thought I’d point that out in case anyone else was considering that trip and can’t meet the new border requirements.

sk8rmom-
Great thinking on your part. Son has a passport but we are not giving it to him for school. Hadn’t even thought about it until you mentioned it. I doubt many, if any, will have one with them.

Flights for us really made it necessary to stay over or we’d have to be at JFK or LGA at 6 Am- No thanks. The 27th and most of 28th will really be move in days until all the kids arrive. Best for us to leave early afternoon on the 28th (to get to the airport) and let son meet the kids- though I hope he meets some the night before. UB seems very friendly so I’m sure they will all be fine. (fingers and toes are crossed on that one!!)

My D’s move in last year went incredibly smoothly. My H was recovering from a serious knee injury and was in a brace so did not accompany us. I thought unloading the car and getting everything to the fifth floor was going to be a nightmare, but I was very happily surprised. Everyone working the dorm move-in was very friendly and organized, there were LOTS of handcarts available for lugging things up and down, even the elevators seemed to cooperate! I had to stay overnight anyway, so D and I decided to play it by ear on the family activities. After unloading and unpacking her stuff, we walked around campus for a bit, and then went to the family picnic. Sometime during the picnic she bumped into a few kids she’d met at her orientation and they starting chatting. At that point I was clearly a “fifth wheel” so I gave her a quick hug and took off for my hotel. We had a nice chat on the phone the next morning, before I headed back to Albany. In retrospect, it was a very graceful transition and we managed to avoid the big tearful goodbye scene. (Not to say there weren’t a few tears and snuffles as I drove back home…)

My D did take her passport with her. She’d had considerable experience traveling abroad, and I knew with Canada so close she might have the opportunity/need – and at short notice – to cross the border.

Good luck to everyone with your move-ins next week!

So, it’s really not necessary to take that third person they suggest? That would be great as S is protesting about missing his football practices and I think we’re going to need the cargo space he would take up. Do they actually have people that will help you get heavy things out of the vehicle onto carts? Are the carts flat or like hand trucks?

ska8rmom
We managed fine just the two of us with an SUV full of stuff. We didn’t have anything so heavy that we couldn’t lift. (but my impression was that the move-in kids would have been happy to help if we’d needed assistance.) The carts are flat, and sturdy, and hold a lot if stacked well, which helped minimize the number of trips from car-to-room.

Good to know, thank you! Now D says she really want her brother to come along and will get whatever won’t fit in the SUV when she comes home later in September. Hopefully he will comply graciously!

Just found this thread. I just got back from a trip to SUNY Buffalo today, and saw all the direction signs are posted for move-in! We saw a few kids moving in to the upperclassmen dorms in Ellicott and Goodyear (some kids get permission to move in early due to professional orientations and other special circumstances). We also saw lots of move-ins in the apartments surrounding the campus.

We did a run to Target and Wal-Mart, and ended up in a single lane stuck in traffic for over 45 min. trying to get to Wal-Mart. I didn’t see the cause of the traffic blockage, but it was bad. The Target was jammed and some shelves were picked clean. I have two kids going there this year (one a Jr and one a grad student). I suspect today’s chaos in the stores was from kids moving into apartments. I know from other years that the area stores are well-prepared for chaos on moving day, and would expect the stores to be fully stocked again with every register manned by next weekend. Still, you obviously will encounter long-lines in area stores on move in day.

We did a quick stop at the bookstore. There are already kids in special t-shirts at the door ready to direct students and help answer questions. UB moved some of the construction barriers for the new engineering school this week, to facilitate access to the bookstore.

There will be lots of carts to help you move in, and some of the clubs provide volunteers that will help students move in too. It goes surprisingly fast (at least compared to my experiences with Penn State move-in days!). The elevators are really small though, so you might find yourself taking stairs before you’re done!

I’ll be taking the 3-4 hour trip back again on Wednesday, for our second move-in before the Pharmacy orientation on Thursday. Whew. I can’t imagine juggling three move-ins next year…

If you haven’t already made your reservations for Family Weekend, you might want to look into making your hotel reservations asap. You’ll be getting info to buy tickets to the football game and (usually) Saturday night comedy show soon, but the hotels are usually booked by the time the Family Weekend Invitations are mailed. Family weekend in October is a great time to bring the winter coats and boots to school, in exchange for the fan and summer clothes.
