I love music, and I have played the piano for my whole life. Although I am going into engineering in college, I would love to participate in music during the four years. Any ideas what it is like in Rice? Do I have to major/minor in music to have a recital/take private lessons/join an orchestra?

Thanks in advance!

Can a music beginner take music classes? Are there opportunities to learn about music even if one isn’t enrolled in the school of music?

Information about non-music major classes and opportunities are here. [Shepherd School of Music - Rice University](http://music.rice.edu/undergraduate/nonmajor.shtml) There is quite a lot you can participate in as a nonmajor. You can also be part of the MOB - there is even a strings section [The MOB • Rice University’s Marching Owl Band](http://mob.rice.edu/)

The Rice Chorale is another opportunity for singers, even if your’e not a music major. It requires an audition and meets twice a week for one credit hour.

My daughter has been singing with the Rice Chorale for the past couple of years and loves it. (She’s an engineering student.) She didn’t have to audition. It’s been a great experience for her. She has glowing things to say about the choral director.
