There are several internet sources that do rankings that say UF has some of the worst dorms in the nation. Some of the articles I read compared them to dungeons. Now that my daughter has been accepted, that is a big concern. I believe there are still un-air conditioned dorms there, too.

How’s the dorms there?
- Actually they are really bad. Even the nearby apartments off campus are pretty bad. The nicer buildings are usually far from your classes.
How’s the food? - The dining hall is pretty bad also. I make my own food since I know what I put in it. Not to mention that the meal plan is overpriced.
What is the Weather and nightlife like? - Weather is very cold winters and extremely (no kidding) hot summers. This is due to the lack of breeze since Gainesville in in the middle of the peninsula.
The night life is pretty nice off campus. In campus, unless you are inside a club or something, it does look like a ghost town at night in campus.
Is it a homophobic place, are there gay people there? - UF is really diverse. You might see anti-gay things and you might see for-gay things. I don’t think you should worry about not finding good people.
How is uf with financial aid. They are ranked #2 best value so… - Its okay. It won’t be as if you have free tuition because of rent and bills and such. Other schools like FAU or UCF give pretty good scholarships that do make attending college feel like free.
How hard are the academics? - Usually, difficulty is proportional to the rankings. By that I mean, a class in some college is lots easier than at UF.
Thank you go gators

From what I say, it sounds like a lot of things sound bad. It has a good education. No flippity doubt about it, but there are some compromises you will need to make or figure out as you go.

I live in a pretty bad apartment. Its ugly. I have to run frequently to publix and have time to make my food. I do get help from parents to pay bills and rent, but those financial things exist. I don’t like the summers because they are crazy hot and I practically need a shower the time I get to one of the classes. I don’t have a car because parking it horrific in Gainesville, at least I save money from insurance and gas.
These are some examples of compromises I made to attend this school.

Afterall, if a gator is missing a leg, it’ll grow back.

Ok thank you very much

My son is a freshman. He lived in Springs dorm last semester and it was very nice but was a few minutes walk from most of his classes. He is an RA this semester in Thomas and it is one of the oldest dorms so it is not as nice as Springs but the location is perfect for him.
The cafeteria offers a lot of choices but it can get old when eating there every day. There are a lot of restaurants on campus and even more right off of campus.
As for weather…it depends on what you are used to. This winter has been chilly and yes summer is hot…it’s Florida! We live on the coast of FL and it is hot here too in the summer.
There is a lot of nightlife right across the street from campus with in walking distance and there is something for everyone…partiers and those that just like to hang out. There are a ton of clubs and groups to get involved in as well.
We have visited the campus many times and have observed a very diverse student population:)
UF does not give tons of financial aid like USF and UCF. They don’t have to…
Academically the school is challenging but I am sure this varies by college some.
My DS is having a great time has met a lot of people, gotten involved in several clubs. Inter mural sports and leadership activities. He loves it" Go Gators!

There are some dorms without air…my son is in one now (as and RA) but has a portable air conditioner that works just fine. There are only a few that don’t have air so just pay your housing deposit as soon as it’s available and you should be able to avoid the rooms with out air.

How’s the dorms there?
-Not great. I would go for something that is either renovated or apartment style if possible.
How’s the food?
-Awful. I would strongly recommend not getting a meal plan. It is really not worth the money.
What is the Weather and nightlife like?
-It’s pretty much either really hot or cold here. I mean really really hot, or cold, like a bunch of days in the 30s and a couple days in the 20s during the winter.
Is it a homophobic place, are there gay people there?
-I don’t particularly think UF is homophobic.
How is uf with financial aid. They are ranked #2 best value so…
-If you family is at least upper-middle class, if shouldn’t be too bad affording UF. Otherwise it could be a stretch.
How hard are the academics?
-Some classes are really hard, others aren’t so bad. I think it’s challenging compared to other Florida schools.

Monthly average temp for Gainesville.

You can plug in your local area and run a comparison with Gainesville.

Thank you all

Have you looked at the luxury dorms at Windsor Hall? I know a few people who lived there that loved it. The rooms are bigger and the buildings are newer so you wouldn’t have to worry about the no air-conditioning.

It’s expensive and coming out of state I am a little scared, but I know uf has a lot of money in financial aid.

Bump

How’s the dorms there?
- There are pros and cons to the dorms, and I think it depends on what you’re looking for. I would definitely avoid the 2 dorms without AC, unless you’re dead set on living in the dorms and need to save money (since no AC dorms are cheaper).
- I lived in the dorms for two years, and here is was I found as pros: The location is great (I could wake up 5 mins before class and still be on time… this depends on the dorm). Concrete walls… which means little to no sound leaks between dorm rooms (this is really nice compared to the paperthin walls found in most student apartments). Unlimited electric/water. Most dorms may be a bit aged, but they are clean and I never saw any bugs.
- Some cons: Depending on your other housing options, they can be somewhat expensive (Mine averaged out to around $600/mo, which is not bad for unlimited utilities, but I could have saved money if I wanted to live in an apartment with 3 roommates). Hard to get into the nicer dorms as a freshman, as returning students get first pick. Small amount of space, compared to an off campus apartment. Some people really dislike the communal bathrooms in the dorms, but personally I found it to be not that bad.

How’s the food?
- If you’re asking about the on campus dining halls, I would say the food is average at best. It’s hit or miss depending on what they’re serving. I would recommend not buying a meal plan (you can still get into the dining halls without a meal plan) as they’re rather expensive and limit your choices when it comes to food.
- As for non-dining hall on campus food and off campus food, there is just about everything you can think of. And lots of food places directly bordering campus, so they’re easy to get to.

What is the Weather and nightlife like?
- If you already live in FL, the weather will be similar. Gainesville seems a bit hotter in the summer and a bit colder in the winter than cities on the coast. Coming from Tampa I didn’t really notice much of a difference.
- Nightlife is good and there seems to be a little of everything. I think this may also depends on where you’re coming from, as I’ve met people from e.g. Miami who think the nightlife (specifically clubs) is boring.

Is it a homophobic place, are there gay people there?
- I’d say UF is a pretty liberal and non-homophobic place.

How is uf with financial aid. They are ranked #2 best value so…
- Can’t really comment on this as I never qualified for FA.

How hard are the academics?
- Depends entirely on the major and specific class. You can find just about any level of hardness you want.

Thank you so much ^ go gators sorty about the fafsa
