I'm doing rugby, and if I am captain of a rugby team can that be considered as a hook?
Do US unis even need rugby players? Should I even bother?

Yeah it shows commitment

IMO, not really. If being captain of sports was a hook, then most of the applicants would have a hook.

Nick3333, I remember you posting that you were GOING to join the rugby team over the summer. How are you a captain of the team?

Are you from the UK? Rugby is not nearly as popular in the States as it is there. It would not be a hook as at best it's a club sport here. Also, for any sport to be a hook, you would have to be an athlete that a specific school was anxious to recruit.

I joined the team not long ago and I'm not captain yet but plan to be, Tami

And yeah the States don't like rugby that much. Damn.. Hmm what if I compete on a national level?
and I used to live in the UK but now I'm in Switzerland

But I mean come on if oboe playing is considered a hook rugby should be too, Right?

ppppp

no. it has to be unique. signing up for a club or sport that just happens to be offered is not that unique. it means it's offered and you signed up.

So you just recently joined, and you're thinking in 2 years to become nationally recognized and be a team captain? Don't you have people on your team whose been playing for longer than you have? Wouldn't they be the captain?

hahah this is a silly post.

UC Berkeley has had championship rugby teams. Don't know about any other colleges though.

Woohoo Berkeley! And yeah so otherwise my ecs are pretty crap.
dammit i wont get into a top us school then. oh well. i can try

I have a 2nd degree black belt but do you think that is crap? its not like they have a "karate team" but it still shows a lot to an admissions officer

yeah it shows you can kick their asses if they dont accept you :P
by the way could Thai Boxing be considered an EC?

There are colleges with rugby teams. Go to a bookstore and get one of the college guides that lists the sports and the colleges that have them. You then need to get some idea of the calibre of the sport at that school, and how important it is to the school, and where your playing abilities fall. Also get an athletes' guide to colleges sports which will give you some ideas on what steps to take. Rugby is a NCAA sport at schools, so there is some level of recruitment. If you look at what the top schools are at the NCAA championships at each division, that gives you some idea of what schools give the sport a lot of attention at different ability levels. D-1 is generally very intense, especially at the top levels.

Well, if you want to know whether or not rugby is a hook...
I founded (and am captain of) our rugby team, play on some regional select sides. Accepted EA to Yale with 1360 SAT and 33ACT.

So is it a hook? They needed rugby players this year. So yes.

Rugby is, however, not a varsity sport at very many schools (maybe only Cal?) So you're not going to get coaches and whatnot recruiting you really, but like anything, if you show a high level of talent, commitment, and passion, it'll happen.

BTW, I also have great essays and recs... that damn SAT always kills me though.

if you're a gay rugby player it'll be a definite hook anywhere

you'll definitely get into NYU that way

it's a hook if you're REALLY REALLY good at it.

Mood he never said he was gay lol how did that enter the thread?

another thread...some guy with crap stats got into NYU probably because he was gay.

well thats just gay!!!!
