Hmm… my nationality is China and I grow up in China But my father is European so I’m mixed-blood. I’m in grade 11 and wants to know more about college application. What’s my chance for UCSD? What about UIUC? Can someone chance me base on the following information Any kind of advice will be helpful
GPA: it’s quite different in China(not sure what is WEIGHT/UNWEIGHT) but mine is generally 3.9/4 (95+/100 here)And that is comparatively the best GPA one can get in Chinese schools.
Test Scores:
SAT 1510 730+780 [essay 6 6 6 ]
TOEFL 115( R 29 L 29 S 27 W 30)
Subject tests 800 in math 2 and 800 in physics
ECs: hmmm…again things are quite different here… honestly haven’t got any experience (even chances) to do what most of you have posted. But I did manage to organize a soccer league at regional level which involves 10 local high schools.
A member of Model Unities Nation Club
A member of Students’s Union.
Awards:
First prize at an English speech contest(province level, which equals state level)
Second-place at an English debate(regional level)
Reference letter:
English teacher: An excellent one. She knows me well and understands the hardship of dealing with Chinese education system and college application at the same time.
Mathematics teacher: An excellent one.
Hmm…generally that’s all I’ve got so far, I know what I have here might seem poor but I’ll do my best to make improvements:-)
Let me know if you need any other information.
Do you have US citizenship? This is going to make a lot of difference in terms of probability. Definitely make sure to show that you are half and half. It’s worse to be just asian than white and asian.
If you have citizenship, you are golden for both. (90%+)
If you do not, I’d say your chances still okay, especially with San Diego (50-60%)
Uhh I don’t have it… it bothers me a lot. Thanks for that bro If I need to choose a reach school, the kind of school worth a shot, what will be your recommendation
It depends a bit on what you want. San Diego is a catholic school, so you would be surrounded by religious peers, and may be required to take a religion class. UIUC is harder to get into, since they are the 4th best for computer science in the world, but they are also secular, so you would be more likely surrounded by a less religious crowd than San Diego.
There’s pros and cons to each, neither will care about essay scores though (lucky for both of us)
I’m also applying to both of these schools, and I honestly don’t see why you shouldn’t go for both if you can (unless money is the issue) I would push you to apply to more reaches than safeties, because that’s where the miracles happen.
Ultimately, the decision is yours. What do you want out of a college?
Uh okay I see, thanks for the information. Sure I will apply to both but I guess I prefer the less religious one… Besides the ranking, safety is also a main factor that concerns me. I guess knowing more congenial friends means a lot to me, and job opportunities after graduation counts as well. Do you know about universities that rank around 30th that are comparatively more open to international students? Especially Asians…
@ConcernedRabbit You don’t need a US citizenship. As long as he has a green card (permanent resident), he is no longer considered an international student, and he is then considered an OOS/IS student.
Priority: IS > OOS > International
OP, by any chance, do you have a green card? If you have it, then you are set; however, if you don’t have it, it will lower chances of your acceptance.
UCSD is not a Catholic University, University of San Diego (USD) is Catholic. UCSD is a California UC public university. Are you able to pay $60K/year to attend UCSD? International and non-residents receive no financial aid from any of the California public universities.
You look like a competitive applicant so UCSD is definitely within reach.
Whoops! So sorry about the mistake! My bad!
I don’t have a green card, my father is European. I was born in China and have been living there since. To go to Chinese schools as foreigners one will need ten thousand papers and basically have to renew it weekly lol. What about Boston University or Boston College?
