Can someone clarify: percentile for admits

UCLA gives a breakdown of the percentile of admitted transfer students and the GPA. Can someone explain to me what this means?

  • Psychology, Pre GPAs: 3.73(25th%) 3.95(75th%)

Does that mean that 75% of Psych applicants scored less than 3.95 or 75% of admits scored 3.95 or higher? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I’m not a math major if it’s any consolation.

Also if you want to check out the profiles yourself, https://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof15_mjr.htm

25th percentile of admits had an average gpa of 3.73
75th percentile had an average gpa of 3.95

so it means that you scored 25% above most or 75% above most
so if you’re in the 25th % then 75% of the admits had a higher gpa

atleast, I think so. I’m taking stats right now lol

What bolognese said… FYI, if the data is normally distributed (or follows any other symmetrical distribution), adding the 25th and 75th percentiles and dividing by 2 gives you the mean.
