Can Someone Explain To Me What Pass/Fail Means In A College Course?

I was curious what that means. If I choose to take a course and choose pass/fail what does that mean I have to do?

at my school, it means if you get a C- or higher, it shows up as a "P" on your transcript. If you get lower than that you get an "F".

It doesn't figure into your GPA. At my school, it is only offered to juniors and seniors, limited to 1 course a semester, and in a course outside of your major or minor.

A lot of the intention is to allow students to take courses in things that are far outside their comfort zones without doing detriment to their GPA. It's supposed to encourage exploration...not sure that really happens.

I took only one class pass/no pass by choice (there were some lame seminars that were set up that way at my school), and it was b/c I didn't want to have it in my GPA and I wanted to slack during my last semester since I had already been accepted to medical school. Ironically I ended up having to really work my butt off to get a C- and pass the course (which I had to pass to graduate). In retrospect I should have just taken the course for a grade and not worried about my GPA. Then I wouldn't have had to work hardly at all.

Sometimes it varies by college what constitutes a pass. And if you're transferring credits from somewhere they may raise the bar on those. Check with your advisor about the pass/fail system at your school.
