Currently I am a corporate finance major looking to get into accounting after this semester. The thing is, throughout college, I never took it seriously and I was fine with C’s, not knowing the importance of GPA. I really decided to start taking it seriously, and I have some concerns, which in turn will guide my future decisions.
My GPA right now is around a 2.6. Not too good, I know, but I am trying really hard to bring it up, and right now I am taking 13 credit hours, all A’s and B’s and one C. I am freaking out currently, and I know I can’t afford C’s anymore, but this economics class is hard for me, and despite tutoring and working hard, I am in a situation in which I have to get a good score on the final to get a good grade in the class.
Of course I will try to get that B, it’s all I can do, but why I am so concerned is that what if I do get a C? What if I consistently get one C a semester? I am already pretty concerned that I am gonna have a hard time getting an internship or even a job after college with my low GPA.
I guess my biggest fear is having all this debt, and all that time, for a degree which I won’t use because no one wants to give a chance to me. I work, and besides a little financial aid, I pay for school all out of my own pocket.
Final line, I am a really hard worker, but I just can’t manage to get straight A’s or B’s. Dare I say, should I drop out? I mean, whats all the hard work for if I cant get a good job?
I don’t think you should not drop out if you are getting mostly As and Bs now with the occasional C (disclaimer - I got a C in Macro back in the day, just could not figure out which way those lines should move on the graph! And I am a successful adult today. )And you can’t expect to just turn around your grades immediately. But it sounds like you have developed some new good habits that are paying off. Keep it up!
I am just really critical of myself now a days. Now I can’t retake it if I get a C, so someone said if you can’t pass, sabotage myself and retake it. Is this crazy?
Some words of wisdom @Mikeb1123
Your GPA determines which college you can get into but it doesn’t determine your future career.
A good college might make you more employable but employers do hire grads from mid-level colleges.
College is just 1 of the factors on employing someone.
IMO, getting the right experience and internship is much better than going to a good school.
Unfortunately, what OwlGaru said is a bit naive. In certain occupations, only certain schools are recruited from. In certain other occupations, mid-level schools, as you refer to them, are also recruited.
From my own personal experience, the mid-level school I work for with a professional accounting major, the students recruited for the big 4 accounting firms and the big regionals look for students with at least a 3:00 GPA or higher.
OP, you state you have a 2.6. If you can bring it up, as an accounting major, you can get a good job. After you get experience and work hard and prove yourself, you can go far.
Do not drop out. Your future is far better with an accounting degree than w/o a degree.
Agree, you should finish your degree. Go to the career placement office and talk to someone there.
And be sure to put on your resume that you have worked your way through school – that is unusual and impressive in this day and age.
