So I was waitlisted, and I really want to go up to Northwestern and interview with an admissions counselor to argue my case, because I feel like it could really help my chances, but my parents don't want to fly to Chicago. Since I am waitlisted, am I allowed to sign up for an overnight visit?

Also, do you think a visit would really help my chances? Because it would be tough to miss school, pay for airfare, etc. for a school I might not even get into, but if it will really improve my chances for getting off the waitlist, I want to do it. So would it?

IMO it could be just what it takes to get you off the waitlist. It did for my DD.

that's pretty questionable, what about families who can't afford to send their kids? not that i disagree with you though, i'm just speaking philosophically

He/she not saying that it's what NU expects you to do to get off the waitlist; he/she is saying that it's something that could potentially help you get off the waitlist.

It's like saying "going to a prestigious private school could be just what it takes to get you into NU." Not everyone can do it and it's not a necessity, but it might help.

i know, i just meant isn't that in reality giving an advantage to more wealthy applicants?

Isn't that kind of... how the college admissions process works? I'm just saying... if you have more money you have more resources at your disposal to make yourself look better. Maybe your parents were alums and donated a lot of money to the school. Maybe you went to an expensive private school. Maybe you paid for SAT tutors and college essay helpers. That's life.

This particular issue isn't even a big deal. From waitlist candidates, NU wants to see demonstrated interest. If you can visit the school, this expresses that quality, so it's definitely a bonus. It sucks if you can't afford to, but then you will just have to express interest in other ways.

Seems like a weird place to start a discussion about that, in a thread about visiting the school :P Not trying to give you a hard time, but it seems a little silly to me.
