“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure” has become the maxim that continues to guide my life. Those words written by Marianne Williamson have encouraged me to succeed beyond my expectations and strive for a better future. The conditions I have been subjected to and have had no control over what would predict a dismal future. I am young black man born in Kenya, but raised in the United States. This year marks my ninth anniversary. I had come a long way against my peers. My parents that are illiterate to the English language. Whom endured extreme hardships such as fleeing from persecution, poverty, and oppression, just to be granted to live in America the land of opportunities. Now living in financial instability. Statistically, the odds are against me. I will not become a statistics. Failure will not be my future. Coming to America I had to adjust and I learned to adapt. Like a turtle, I mastered the ability to live both in water and on land. Or, I should say, I learned to survive at home and outside of my home. As I grew older I learned the importance of education in this country, that it is the key to success. My parents placed a high value on education, therefor I didn't want to disappoint them.

For the last four years such proverbs have continuously urged me to challenge myself outside my comfort zone. I have enrolled in many honors course and few AP course to separate me from the “average student”. I have demonstrated determination, dedication, and commitment to ventures that bring enjoyment to me while serving the community and others .These accomplishments have not come easy. I strive for Hard Work, Knowledge, and Integrity . All the aforementioned equate to being successful. Success is interchangeable control and my ultimate objective in life is to have control over it. thus, my conquest for success, my natural inclination towards the engineering field, and being confident that I am fully capable of competing at one of the best engineering schools in the nation, has brought me to Penn State engineering. This discipline will allow me to explore Penn State and its different cultures. Not only will I be able to engage in engineering transactions, I will also be continuously expanding my horizons and participating in the learning experience by connecting with people.

I promise to fulfill my potential. The greatness I possess would be able to dispel such notions of failure. I want to have the power to shape my future that shall seem incomprehensible to the unsuspecting masses. Williamson’s wisdom has reassured me that the steps that I been taking to obtain objectives and evolve me into a young man that I could be.
