Can talking about domestic abuse in essays lead to police investigation?

Just as the title says. Additionally, would either UCs or privates ask a student's counselor to verify such essay topics with the student? I'm asking this question for a close friend of mine whose violent father abused them in the past. They haven't talked openly about this to adults in their community and would rather not have it exposed during their senior year. However, since the experience has had a significant impact on their high school life I told them it deserved to be addressed in their essay.

To be clear, if my friend talking about their past with domestic abuse in their college essay could lead to that past being exposed within their community, they have been adamant that they will not address the topic at all. For their sake I hope this is not the case. Thank you.

If the student is under 18, the colleges have a duty to contact CPS. If over 18, there’s not as much that can be done without a complainant pressing charges.

I would imagine anything serious would at the very least warrant a call to the high school.

Is this even in the case of past abuse or only if it’s an ongoing problem?
