Can Too Many Supplement Hurt?????

when i was first applying, i thought that the more the better- since i wouldnt have been there to represent myself.....i thought...let the papers do it for me.

But now......im thinking that too much supplements might hurt... so here goes

1.Resume (just thought it was necesarry)
2.Extra Essay (absolutely COULD not decide which of my 2 essays to use for my common app, so i sent this one- it was good everyone says that, but the one i sent through common app, said a lot more about me explicitely)
3.Friend Evaluation (trying to bolster my chances???)

I sent them in separate envelopes so they could always chose not to read them though :)

maybe i did it because my SAT grade wasnt all that good 2000< but <2100
although i had two 800 for SAT ll :)
should i redo SAT?

if they don’t ask for it DON"T SEND IT

A for Admissions author(Dartmouth adcom) thinks resumes are pretentious.

I think an extra essay shows you aren’t succinct

yea im kinda feeling alittle scared at this moment, that i may have actually messed up my chances before i had a chance…arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg!

Don’t send in too much stuff. They read thousands and thousands of applications a year, and if you can’t impress them within a reasonable time frame then they’ll cease being interested in you altogether.

Jack: only send in supplements that might help. A peer evaluation or extra essay might annoy the adcoms unless they’re going to be incredibly unique and interesting. A resume, or perhaps a supplement of high-quality creative work, is likely to be more impressive. Supplementary material is not a necessity for admission. I only sent a resume and I didn’t even get an interview. Didn’t hurt me. Best of luck :)

as in, i spoke to an adcom and she said that as long as my essay isnt an epistle then fine, she will give it a read.

to be honest the resume does sound pretentious although it is widely accepted as a form of conveying worth to someone who doesnt know you (many plp send it so i not too worried)

the friend valuation or extra recommendation is always optional so i not tooooooo worried

BUT

i’m starting ti think that the combination of all three can start to damage my chances (i mean it did sound like a good idea when i was sending it) but now…

By the way @ slake: what school you got into?

Jack, I got into Yale. Send only one of those three materials, or maybe the resume plus a creative supplement. Most people send the resume so colleges usually expect that you will; it’s hardly pretentious. After all, it’s not very easy fitting in your major accomplishments into the commonapp. Good luck  Three, however, is just too much (if one is an essay, but that’s just me :P).

Anyway, don’t worry. Some people have sent in tons of supplementary material without it mattering. And you could retake your SAT I, if you think that the rest of your app isn’t solid enough (since your score’s below 2100). Still, scores aren’t everything, as we’ve all seen.

i really hope it doesnt matter though…cause that would be a bummer!..i really hipe you are right about it not mattering.

the only school i didnt send any supplements to was Stanford becuz i applied EA (got deferred -_-) but yeah…i think my app. is solid although yale tends to be more “score” selective than Stanford

I mean Stanford would see it ok for me to get below 2100 but i dont think Yale would…am i right (i havent seen anyone who got in with below 2200)?

*i did SAT in my junior year so im guessing i would increase my grade if i did it over…

Honestly, I fail to see the point in attaching a third essay, when Yale requires two anyway. You probably should be able to tell them all about yourself in two…and ditto with the friend evaluation. If you’re concerned about low scores, retake the SAT.
But resumes and arts supplement should be fine. A lot of people do that, and it’s kind of necessary if you want to showcase your artistic side.

The extra essay and friend recommendation is not at all a good idea, ever, by anybody. Anyone who gets in this way gets in in spite of this, not because of this.

You really don’t even need to send even one of the three things you sent.

An extra essay, unless absolutely exceptional, might be a pain for adcoms to read when they’ve got thousands upon thousands of others to get through. A friend supplement is not necessary unless asked for. And you really don’t need to send a resume - they often just repeat what’s stated in the Common App.

Well if The Government says so, you should probably listen… :stuck_out_tongue: (Awesome name, The Government…)

I heard that the thicker the application, the more the applicant has to make up for. Granted, I’m sending in an extra recommendation and a research abstract, and I wrote an extra essay explaining why I stopped showing up to high school, but I think those were necessary… If you’re just restating the same things, I doubt they want to hear about it. If your supplemental materials are unique and add something truly awesome (or bizarre, colleges seem to like that too) to your application, then go for it.

Thank you guys for all your answers, you been very enlightening about the application process…hasnt done much to dispel my fears- of my chance of admission diminishing- but atleast i wont be taken aback by the rejection letter in April.

the thicker the file, the thicker the applicant
